Chapter 2. Shirk and the First People to Commit Shirk, and the Answers to the Grave Worshiper بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم Chapter 2. Shirk and the First People to Commit Shirk from the People of Nuh, and the Attitudes of those like them from the pass up til our times. The Answer to the grave worshipers. And الشرك Shirk: It is to worship other than Allah with Allah [ in worship ],It is to take a thing from these types of worship for other than Allah The Exalted and Most High like Sacrifice, Vows, Supplication, Seeking Aid, and Fear, Awe/tranquility and Hope and other than that. So if you take a thing from these kinds of worship other than Allah for this is Shirk. Indeed that if you make shirk [to make rivals in worship with Him or worship other than Him] with Allah along in worship with Him this is Shirk [Polytheist beliefs]. And the first to embark upon shirk on the earth, were the people of Nuh, whatsoever extreme in al salihoon [ the pious people who worship Allah]. The first people were upon Tawheed from the covenant of Adam up to the people of Nuh they were upon Tawheed, and between the people of Nuh were righteous and pious men upon knowledge [of Allah, and Scholars]. The worshipers had extreme and profound love for them, so they died [these pious men] all in one year, so there was sadness upon their people, so Shaitan came to them and said to them: Draw an image of them and raise it up high your place of sitting for that is the best way for you to remember worship if you see the pictures of them. He [Shaitan] came from the path of giving advice and to promote upon the good, and they did not think or ponder to the penalties, and they were not aware perhaps they were their enemies [ meaning the pious men who died, by raising this picture they doing wrong] so they obeyed him [Shaitan]. So this affair is clear that it is good? Because it targets itself, their diligent upon worship, after that shirk did not innovate in the first raising of these pictures because with them were scholars [people of knowledge] and Shaitan did not dare to say to them that these pictures are benefits and harm, because the people of knowledge the scholars would of have prohibited this. So when the period past and the scholars died from the people of Nuh, so none was left behind with knowledge, so the knowledge was abolish [disappeared], and none was left back except the ignorant. So Shaitan came to them and he said: that your fathers did not raise these pictures [idols] except for worshiping it, and worshiping it will bring you rain. So that enter their understanding for their ignorance, and there was no scholar to refute this doubt, and this shirk for this is the first sihaaamu al-mugrideen [arrows {attack} bias haters] upon Tawheed [Islamic Monotheism] so they worship them from other than Allah, which were these pictures [of these pious men]. So Allah sent Nuh upon him is blessings and peace with them he called them to the oneness of worship to Allah [making Him one in worship]. And leaving off the worship of these idols and him [Nuh] restore them to the origin which they were created for, and this is the mercy of Allah the Exalted and the most High, for His slaves that he did not leave them behind in front of their enemies, rather He sent to them whom he warns them and weakens the doubts which promoted between them. This is from the mercy of Allah for His slaves, that He sends Messengers and He send down books which clarifies and explain the correct path and connects to Allah the Exalted the Most High and He who clarify and explain as-shirk [what is worship other than Allah and made rivals with Him in worship] and its paths and means, for He did not leave His slaves behind without a purpose and do not leave them for Shaitan. And for that Allah sent Nuh [upon him be blessings and peace] he call them to Allah The Exalted the Most High, he ascribed to the origin which is Tawheed which they were created for that reason, so he stayed with them just as He the Exalted the Most High said : ألْفَ سَنةٍ إِلَّا خَمسِينَ عَامًا. سورة العنكبوت: 14 “Thousand years less fifty years [inviting them to believe in the Oneness of Allah (Monotheism)” Look to the evil if it enters upon the hearts it hard to expel it and its doubts and if it nest, it is hard to battle it, [being establish] nine hundred years to a thousand years. And the Prophet and Messenger of Allah [ upon him be peace and blessing] he knowing this problem, and dealing with it, and calling to Allah Exalted and the Most High mentions that in His Book. From that he mentions it in Suratu Nuh the complete story of Nuh with his people He the Most High said: إَنّآ أَرْسَلنَا نوحًا إَلى قَومِهِ أَنْ أَنْذِرْ قَوْمَكَ مِن قَبلِ أَن يَاْتِيهُمْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ 1 قَالَ يَقَوْمِ إِنّي لَكُم نَذِيرٌ مُّبِينٌ2 أَنِ اعْبُدُوا اللّهَ وَ اتَّقُوهُ وَ أَطِيعُونِ 3 يَغْفِرْ لَكُم مّن ذُنُوبِكُمْ وَ يُؤَخِرْكُمْ إِلىَ أَجَلٍ مُّسِمًّى إِنَّ أَجَلَ اللّهِ إِذَا جَآءَ لاَ يُؤَخَّرُ لَو كُنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ 4 سورة نوح Verily, We sent Nuh (Noah) to his people (Saying): “Warn your people before there comes to them a painful torment. He said: “O my people! Verily, I am a plain Warner to you, that you should worship Allah (Alone), be dutiful to Him, and obey me, “He (Allah) will forgive you of your sins and respite you to an appointed term. Verily, the term of Allah when it comes, cannot be delayed, if you but knew.” Surah Nuh verse: 1-4 Like this he called them to Allah, with evidence and proofs and gentleness and softness and spiritual admirations so perhaps they will respond to his call. Then indeed they increase in their evil: قَالَ رَبِّ إِنّيِ دَعَوتُ قَومِي ليلاً ونَهَارًا 5 فَلَمْ يَزِدْهُمْ دُعَآءِى إِلاَّ فِرَارًا6 وَإِنّيِ كُلَّما دَعَوْتُهُمْ لِتَغْفِرَ لَهُمْ جَعَلُوا أَصابِهُمْ في ءَاذَانِهِمْ وَ أسْتَغْشَوْا ثِيَابَهُمْ وَ أَصَرُّواْ وَ اسْتَكْبَرُوا اسْتِكْبَارًا7 سورة نوح He said: “O my Lord! Verily, I have called my people night and day (i.e. secretly and openly to accept the doctrine of Islamic Monotheism). But all my calling added nothing but to (their) flight (from the truth). And verily! Every time I called unto them that You might forgive them, they thrust their fingers into their ears, covered themselves up with their garments, and persisted (in their refusal), and magnified themselves in pride.” Surah Nuh verse 5-7 They did not love to listen the voice of the Messenger of Allah: أسْتَغْشَوْا ثِيَابَهُمْ “Covered themselves up with their garments…” They wrapped themselves with their garments for perhaps they do not see Allah’s Prophet Peace and blessings be upon him. Like he was and enemy of them: وَ أَصَرُّواْ وَ اسْتَكْبَرُوا اسْتِكْبَارًا “And persisted [in their refusal], and magnified themselves in pride.” They magnified themselves with pride concerning the call of the truth, so they did not accept it. ” ثُمَّ إِنِّي دَعَوْتُهُمْ جِهَاراً (8(ثُمَّ إِنِّي أَعْلَنتُ لَهُمْ وَأَسْرَرْتُ لَهُمْ إِسْرَاراً (9) فَقُلْتُ اسْتَغْفِرُوا رَبَّكُمْ إِنَّهُ كَانَ غَفَّاراً (10) يُرْسِلِ السَّمَاءَ عَلَيْكُم مِّدْرَاراً (11وَيُمْدِدْكُم بِأَمْوَالٍ وَبَنِينَ وَيَجْعَل لَّكُمْ جَنَّاتٍ وَيَجْعَل لَّكُمْ أَنْهَاراً (12) “And verily every time I called unto them that You might forgive them, they thrust their fingers into their ears, covered themselves up with their garments, and persisted (in their refusal), and magnified themselves in pride. “Then verily, I called to them openly (aloud); “Then verily, I proclaimed to them in public, and I have appealed to them in private, “I said (to them): ‘Ask forgiveness from your Lord; Verily, He is Oft-Forgiving; ‘He will send rain to you in abundance; ‘And give you increase in wealth and children, and bestow on you gardens and bestow on you rivers.” Surah Nuh 8-12 Look at the caller to Allah: مّا لَكُم لا تَرجونَ لِلهِ وَ قَارًا “What is the matter with you, [that you fear not Allah (His punishment), and] you hope not for reward (from Allah or you believe not in His Oneness). “ Surah Nuh: 13 What is the matter, you are not mighty than Allah the Most High, and that you respect and have honor for Him. Because [your actions] worshiping other than Him, is a contradiction to Allah the Most High. What do you think you are, on the same level as Him, you are not on the same level as Him. And you worship with Him and take rivals in worship with Him by taking His creation he who is like you [as gods beside Him, like those pious men the people of Nuh took as gods beside Allah], rather yet are you more powerful than death?! You walk about [your lives] and your earnings while they are dead in their graves [those who they worship who is powerless, for Allah is all Powerful all Mighty Ever Living]. مَا لَكُمْ لاَ تَرْجُونَ لِلَّهِ وَقَاراً (13وَقَدْ خَلَقَكُمْ أَطْوَاراً (14) أَلَمْ تَرَوْا كَيْفَ خَلَقَ اللَّهُ سَبْعَ سَمَوَاتٍ طِبَاقاً (15وَجَعَلَ القَمَرَ فِيهِنَّ نُوراً وَجَعَلَ الشَّمْسَ سِرَاجاً (16) وَاللَّهُ أَنْبَتَكُم مِّنَ الأَرْضِ نَبَاتاً (17ثُمَّ يُعِيدُكُمْ فِيهَا وَيُخْرِجُكُمْ إِخْرَاجاً (18) وَاللَّهُ جَعَلَ لَكُمُ الأَرْضَ بِسَاطاً (19) “What is the matter with you, [that you fear not Allah (His punishment), and] you hope not for reward (from Allah or you believe not in His Oneness). While He has created you in (different) stages [i.e. first Nutfah, then ‘Alaqah and then Mudghah, see (VV.23:13, 14) the Quran]. You know not how Allah has created the seven heavens one above another, and has made the moon a light therein, and made the sun a lamp? And Allah has brought you forth from the (dust of) earth. Afterward He will return you into it (the earth), and bring you forth (again on the Day of Resurrection)? And Allah has made for you the earth wide spread (an expanse).” Surah Nuh 14-19 Allah reminds them of His Ayah [signs, and proofs] of the universe and the outer and inner of His blessing. Concerning those who are dead what they establish for you? Did they created the heavens and the earth? Do they know what your provision will be? Do they send down upon you rain, which thing you are predetermined with them? و الله أنبتكم من الأرض نباتًا ، ثم يعيدكم فيها و يجرجكم إخراجًا، و الله جعل لكم الأرض بِسَاطًا، لتسلكوا منها سبلًا فجاجًا “And Allah has brought you forth from the (dust of) earth. Afterward He will return you into it (the earth), and bring you forth (again on the Day of Resurrection)? And Allah has made for you the earth wide spread (an expanse). That you may go about therein in broad roads.” Surah Nuh: 17 – 20 So when all of this did not affect them, Nuh said: قَالَ نُوحٌ رَّبِّ إِنَّهُمْ عَصَوْنِي وَاتَّبَعُوا مَن لَّمْ يَزِدْهُ مَالُهُ وَوَلَدُهُ إِلاَّ خَسَاراً “Nuh (Noah) said: “My Lord! They have disobeyed me, and followed one whose wealth and children give him no increase but only loss. “ Surah Nuh 21 They left the Messenger of Allah and they followed the call to shirk [polytheist beliefs] and Sihamul Mugrdeen, the arrows [the attacks] of the bias [against Tawheed {Islamic Monotheism]: ” وَاتَّبَعُوا مَن لَّمْ يَزِدْهُ مَالُهُ وَوَلَدُهُ إِلاَّ خَسَاراً (21) وَمَكَرُوا مَكْراً كُبَّاراً (22) وَقَالُوا لاَ تَذَرُنَّ آلِهَتَكُمْ وَلاَ تَذَرُنَّ وَداًّ وَلاَ سُوَاعاً وَلاَ يَغُوثَ وَيَعُوقَ وَنَسْراً (23)” “Nuh (Noah) said: “My Lord! They have disobeyed me, and followed one whose wealth and children give him no increase but only loss. And they have plotted a mighty plot. And they have said: ‘You shall not leave your gods, nor shall you leave Wadd, nor Suwa’, nor Yaghuth, nor Ya’uq, nor Nasr (names of the idols) “Surah 21 -23 These are the pious men, whom they died, and they made these idols of them, and these are their names. [Wadd, Suwa, Yaghuth, Ya’ug, Nasr] They are convince with staying upon idol worshiping, and they reject the call of Tawheed [ Monotheism] and they obey the false and astray call, and they reject the call of Tawheed [Monotheism], and the preacher of Tawheed [Monotheism] . They are enjoining each other with this, and this word, they say the Kufar [disbeliever in Islamic Monotheism] and the Mushrik [people of shirk {polytheist}] toward the call of the Prophets all around history, just as the people of Nuh said: ” أءنا لتاركوا آلهتنا لشاعر مجنون” “And (they) said: “Are we going to abandon our aliha (gods) for the sake of a mad poet?” Surah as-Saffat verse: 36 أجعل الآلهة إلها واحدًا إن هذا لشئ عُجاب “Has he made the aliha (gods) (all) into One Ilah (God – Allah). Verily, this is a curious thing!” Its meaning: Shirk [polytheist beliefs] not strange and Tawheed [Islamic Monotheism} is strange?! ما سمعنا بهذا فى ملة الآخر “We have not heard (the like) of this among the people of these later days….” Meaning: it’s the religion of our forefathers. إن هذا إلا اختلاق “…This is nothing but an invention!” Surah Sad: 5 -7 Which it is a lie, and he who calls to shirk [polytheist beliefs] as if it is the truth, and the Messenger who calls to Tawheed [Islamic Monotheism] a liar?! Like this is their understanding as if to corrupt the image of the truth as falsehood and the falsehood as truth, ‘Allah forbid’, they shaped the Messenger as a liar? And their way more advisable than the Creator, and more knowledgeable than the Creator, and they make Him the liar, and they make the call of astray and falsehood and the call of shirk [polytheist beliefs] as being the truth, and the correct advice and way. Thus if Allah make them blind to see the truth so this is what comes from them and exhort this between various nations: أجئتنا لنعبد الله وحده و نذر ما كان يعبد آباؤنا ، فأتينا بما تعدنا إن كنت من الصادقين “They said: “You have come to us that we should worship Allah Alone and forsake that which our fathers used to worship. So bring us that wherewith you have threatened us if you are of the truthful.” ٍSurah al A’raaf: 70 Allah calls them for worshiping Him Alone, so they said: Out of the question that we abandon the worship of idols, and like this is evil, and like this is their ugly understanding. If it nests in the heads and it connects with the hearts, so indeed it is especially hard to abandon and stop it. Who is accustom to evil, and evil is feasible for him, surely it hard to deal with it and cure it. Concerning he who is upon this life or his natural inclination, and the affair of ignorance is address to him and he request clarification of the truth and he accept it. But he who is persisting in being astray for indeed there is no return for him ever. But this does not mean that we abandon Dawah [ the call to Islamic Monotheism] rather we call him to Allah and persist for the reason to establishing the proof upon him, for the reason to abolish his doubts, so that he is not mislead with it, to the end [of his life]. So we do not abandon to clarify the truth, and that many of the people will not accept it rather we clarify the truth and who accept it alhamdullillah [ All Praise due to Allah] and this is for the one who seeks the truth. And he who does not accept the truth, so surely we establish the proof upon him, and we free our protection and Allah the Most High say: لم تعظون قومًا الله مهلكهم أو نعدهم عذابًا شديدًا ,قالوا معذرة إلى ربكم و لعلهم يتقون “Why do you preach to a people whom Allah is about to destroy or to punish with a severe torment?” (The preachers) said: “In order to be free from guilt before your Lord (Allah), and perhaps they may fear Allah.” Surah A’raf: 164 So the way of the Mushrik [polytheist] that they do not want to come out of their shirk [worship other then Allah or to take rivals in worship with Allah] Allah the Most High say : أجئتنا لتنهانى عن ما وجدنا عليه آبائنا و تكون لكم الكبرياء فى الارض و ما نحن لكم بمؤمنون “Have you come to us to turn us away from that (Faith) we found our fathers following, – and that you two may have greatness in the land? We are not going to believe you two!” Surah Yunus: 78 They said that to Musa and Harun upon them two peace. They said “you came to turn us away from our gods and you and the grandeur and presidency over us: ما هذا إِلاَّ بَشَرٌ مِثْلُكُمْ يُرِيدُ أَنْ يَتَفَضَّلَ عَلَيكُمْ “He is no more than a human being like you, he seeks to make himself superior to you.” Surah Mumin: 24 Like this they accused the Messengers peace be upon them. Do not be surprise if callers [of Islamic Monotheism] are accused of things like that the Messengers were accused: و تكون لكم الكبرياء فى الارض و ما نحن لكما بمؤمنين “ ..and that you two may have greatness in the land? We are not going to believe you two!” Surah Yunus: 78 Rather that Faroun said: ذرونى اقتل موسى و ليدعوا ربه إنى أخاف أن يبدل دينكم أو يظهر فى الارض الفساد “Leave me to kill Musa (Moses), and let him call his Lord (to stop me from killing him)! I fear that he may change your religion, or that he may cause mischief to appear in the land!” Surah Ghafir verse: 26 Look at how he came at the true correct path, and at Musa, that he shall change their Deen [way of Life, of Islamic Monotheism]¿! To make it clear on the earth as to be corrupt?! Shirk [polytheist beliefs] and they name it the Deen [True way of life] along with the correct Deen which is Tawheed [Islamic Monotheism] and they name Shirk to be the Deen [True way of Life], and it is the false Deen. And the Deen of Truth it is Tawheed which the Creator created it for that purpose. Faroun’s people said: “Will you leave Moses and his people to cause corruption in the land and abandon you and your gods?” Surah Araaf: 127 And they describe them being corrupt on the earth, and they describe the Prophets and the scholars, and the Pious with them being corrupt in the earth “and abandon you and your gods?” And this is bad company, like this is the inner evil they confront the King or President or upon the one who is over affairs with, and he [ the ruler] turns away from the call of Truth, and banish the call of Truth. Because they, just as they claim – the corrupt ones on earth, and they named them to be the ones that were corrupt on earth. Because this is their nature, or because they want to change the people concerning the call of the pious and they want to describe the Pious with corruption in the earth. This is at all times and places and this is from the Sihaamul Mugrideen the opposite of the call of Tawheed at all times and places. And the polytheists, those who worship the idols so they do not establish that the idols create or give or provide or give life or death because they know that the idols have no power upon that and that there no power except the Power of Allah. Allah the Most High states: And if you asked them, “Who created the heavens and earth?” they would surely say,” Allah.” surah Luqman :25 And He the Most High says: “And if you ask them who created them, they will surely say: Allah” Surah Zukruf :87 And He the Most High says: “Who provides for you from the heaven and the earth? Or who controls hearing and sight and who brings the living out of the dead and brings the dead out of the living and who arranges [every] matter?” They will say,” Allah,” Surah Yunus :31 So they are well inform of Tawheed Rububiya [ Oneness of the Lordship of Allah] and that there is no power over a thing from the creation except Allah and that their idols have no power upon a thing from that, hence why do you worship them? They say: “شُفَعَؤُنا عِندَاللهِ” “These are our intercessors with Allah” Surah Yunus :18. We do not worship them because they do not create, provide or they are not aware, but they are our intercessors with Allah, a mediator with Allah and they mediate for us with Allah. Did Allah close His door concerning his caller [who calls upon Him], concerning His slaves until he needs a mediator. So Allah open His door for those who ask, and He answer the call or the caller and if he call upon Him, He Allah feels compel to answer him and give to the one who is asking. And He comes down every night to the sky of this world and he say: “Who ask and I give him and who seeks repentance for I accept repentance upon him, He who seeks forgiveness for I forgive him” Hadith Bukhari. So do you need to make between you and Him a mediator when the only thing you need to do is to stretch out your hands to Him [all Glory and the Most High] with the heart present and to seek from Him as you wish and seek from Him the worldly and hereafter for He is Ganee Kareem The all Rich free of wants all Noble. So there is no need to want to make between you and Him a mediator. Concerning the rulers of the world do not reach to them, except as an agent and mediator [for diplomacy]. Concerning Allah [The Majestic and Most High ] He is the Hearer and the Close Responder, and answers who calls on Him, night and day and His door is open and He Hear and See all, Glory be unto Him. There no need for no one or thing to make between you and Him an intercessor. He the Most High say: “And they worship other than Allah that which neither harms them nor benefits them, and they say, “These are our intercessors with Allah.” Surah Yunus :18 Which: they intercede for us with Allah: “Unquestionably, for Allah is the pure religion. And those who take protectors besides Him [say], “We only worship them that they may bring us nearer to Allah in position.” Surah Zumur :3 Hence why do you not get near to Allah in position, either Allah is far from you and He does not hear you or see you?! Either Allah does not give you that which you seek from Him?! Did Allah close His door concerning you?! This is from the doubts of the Shaitan that which it meets in the heart of the people, and it puts doubt deeply rooted in the heart that it becomes hard to resist it. And in our time this grave worshiping is in the likeness of the Pre-Islamic polytheist Arab pagans the same as them except that the Pre-Islamic polytheist Arab pagans were more clever and smart from them [the grave worshipers of the Muslims]. Because when the Messenger sallahu wa alayhi wa sallam said to them [the Polytheist of Makkah] “There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah” they said: “And the leaders among them went about (saying): “Go on, and remain constant to your aliha (gods)! Verily, this is a thing designed (against you)! “We have not heard (the like) of this among the people of these later days. This is nothing but an invention!” Surah Sad: 5-6 So they know the meaning of “ There no deity worthy of worship except Allah” and it means you leave the worship of other than Allah, and that they single out Allah in worship and they do not need [mediators], rather they need to worship with Him other than Him and they claim that they are the intercessors and that they will get them near to Allah in position. Concerning the grave worshipers of today so in them there is stupidity because they say there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and they worship other than Him, concerning the Polytheist for they refuse to say it, for that they contradict, and with that, they say ‘there no deity worthy of worship except Allah’ and they call upon in worship other than Allah. This is a contradiction, and those who do not need contradiction they resist shirk and avoid contradiction, concerning the foolish and the ones unaware in this time for they worship those who are dead and tombs and they say ‘There no deity worthy of worship except Allah’ they call upon Allah with all kinds of remembrance from night and day and they say: Oh Ali, Oh Hussein, Oh Abdul Qaadir, Oh Nashaqabandi, Oh so and so relief me, give me and they say ‘There no deity worthy of worship except Allah’. This is a big contradiction! How you say there no deity worthy of worship except Allah and you call upon other than Allah?! So the Polytheist they refuse to say there no deity worthy of worship except Allah ,contrary, contradiction and those who do not raise up from contradictions [the grave worshipers] for they say there no deity worthy of worship except Allah abundantly and they associate [with Allah] abundantly , ‘ for Allah forbid’. So this is why As-Shaykh Al-Islam Muhammad Abdul Wahab rahimallah Allah [may Allah have mercy upon him] when he mentions this principle he said: “ There is no good in a disbeliever man of Quraish who know the meaning of ‘ There is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, so disbelievers of Quraish they knew the meaning of there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, and they refused, and they were determine on it for that those who did not know the meaning of there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and for that they called upon other than Allah, and they sacrifice to other than Allah and they did not name this shirk rather they named it with Tawasil [a thing or action to get them close to Allah] and they said Allah the Most High say: يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَابْتَغُوا إِلَيْهِ الْوَسِيلَةَ وَجَاهِدُوا فِي سَبِيلِهِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ ﴿٣٥﴾ (35) O you who believe! Be careful of (your duty to) Allah and seek means of nearness to Him and strive hard in His way that you may be successful. And He said: أُولَـٰئِكَ الَّذِينَ يَدْعُونَ يَبْتَغُونَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِمُ الْوَسِيلَةَ ‘Those whom they call upon, themselves seek the means of access to their Lord’ Al Isaaraa :57 by Shaykh Salih al Fawzan a book titled the call to tawheed and the arrows of the biases.
