Chapter One _ (continuing) Exile You both are more than welcome to stay during this time, said the man in the long white coat, chubbier than the one they passed on the way in. Mister lay on the table top in the small cubical room, tail wagging back and forth has he pondered why Emma held onto him tightly with salty tears rolling down her rosy red cheeks. No, we will have to be going. Young one here needs to get to school. Emma shot her glare at her mother, but said no more, as if her words were just on her tongue, but not quiet making it out. Her embrace tightened softly one last time around the 11-year-old dogs neck, before breaking apart. Emma solemnly followed her mother out of the small, cold, room. Raising to his paws, Mister leaped from the table, letting out a whimpering bark. Emma paused and looked back, tears falling, I love you, Mister. Im sorry I couldnt save you. Then they left him, leaving him to jerk against the leash that bounded him to that counter, only his confused, lonely howling echoing down the halls, following Emma and her mother, even after the car pulled out of the parking lot. Wait, please, Im sorry for all I did, just come back! Please, come back, dont leave me! Yanking against the leash, he ignored the leather that dug into his scruff, piercing his skin. Hey, hey, calm down, the white-coat man said, speaking with a soothing voice. The same sort of voice any white-coat would use to talk to him with. Though, if there was one thing he learned from his master, Johnny, it was to respect those who were there to help. Mister lowered his tail, then lunged back up onto the freezing table. Laying down, he listened as he heard a soft pop from his haunches. This old dog thing was killing him. Staring longingly at the door his family had left through, Mister nearly missed hearing the slurp of liquid. A low growl rose up from his throat, and he sucked in the stale air through his bared canines. Eyeing the needle the white-coat cautiously set down, Mister got back to his paws, slowly standing, his muscles rippling beneath his fur, showing his strength. Pure fear hit the white-coats eyes, and Mister nearly pounced, until realizing the man was only fleeing the room. Seeing light shine through the gap in the slowly shutting door, Mister leaped to the tiled floor, wedging himself between the door and the wall. Perking his ears, Mister rounded the door that struck his hip, and trotted down the hall. Two white-coats crossed the hall without noticing him, so he continued his way, head low and ears rotating like satellites. A few paces away, he could pick the squealing voice of the chubby white-coat, then raised his head when hearing the bells ring from the front door. Breaking into a sprint, Mister ran through the legs of the chubby white-coat and toward the the closing door. Stop that dog! Shouted a man, startling the woman with a handful of felines that just entered. Skidding to a halt, Mister glanced over his shoulder, his chances of leaving becoming more uncertain with each step the white-coat took. Glancing up at the woman, he folded back his ears. Please. I must get to my girl.
