Chapter Two: Going out. The sound of the water running filled my ears, as I sat alone on the couch watching a show that I didnt even know what was going on. Mae picked it, and she was in the kitchen, as Carter was showering. She came into the room with a can of soda. I watched her open it and sit next to me, as the boring show continued. Mae, I have no idea whats happening. I finally said, getting annoyed with the shows characters and plotline. Okay, so this guy--she pointed to a man in a suit on the show--is the guy that is accusing this guy--she pointed to a guy in rags--of the murder of his best friend. she said, and as she took a sip, I heard Carter come out. I turned to him, as he walked the other way down the hallway with a towel wrapped around his waist. The water glistened off his back, and I tried to ignore him and focus on Maes weird show. She laughed when they said something, which I did not at all see funny. Carter came out and grabbed his car keys and gestured to the door. Where are we going? Mae asked, turning off the TV. I looked out the window; the sun was already going down. Somewhere. he said, smiling. Oh, thats so helpful. she said, as I followed her to his car. The car stopped in front of Carlys house and Carter honked the horn. Where is she? Mae asked, as we waited for about five minutes. Cmon Carls. Carter honked the horn again, and thats when the front door opened. Omg. She isnt, is she? She was. She had on a short white skirt and pink crop top with her hair in a side ponytail. She opened the side door and we all stared at her. What? she asked. Babe, what are you wearing? Carter asked, giving her a quick once-over. Clothes. she answered. Besides, why do you care? As long as I look hot, right? Carter smiled shyly and looked to the road. He drove for a while before pulling into the driveway of a familiar house. Uh, Carter? I said, as we moved closer up to the house. Yeah? he asked, parking beside a white Prius. Whos house is this? I asked, and smiled awkwardly as he scratched the back of his head. Marissas. he answered. MARISSA!? Carly, Mae, and I asked in unison. Dont worry, its a big party I doubt youll see her. he said, getting out of the car. We followed him to the door and went inside. Why did she invite us? Carly asked. She hates our guts. Technically, she didnt invite you guys. he said. Only me, but she said I could bring anyone. I dont think anyone meant the people she hates most. she said, as we continued to walk through the party. He shrugged. I sat on a perfectly white leather sofa next to Mae, as Carter and Carly danced on the dance floor. I hope she doesnt find us. I said, after a while. Who? Mae asked. She was a bit slow at times. Marissa. I said. Oh, yeah. she said. Yeah, that would suck. But look at this crowd; even she cant see through, I bet. ...but she could be right sometimes (and know what shes talking about). Even still, I hope we dont run into her. I said, as Carter and Carly came back all sweaty. Well, with our luck we just might. I mean, you never know. she said, getting up and bumping into someone. I looked up to find her. Of course. You owe twenty bucks. Mae said, after looking at Marissa and turning to me. We never made a bet. I said. We can now. Money, now; thatd be great. she said and I smiled, as Marissa continued to glare at us; Mae turned to her. What? Oh, nothing; I was just looking at a rare species that should be extinct. The dino-whores. Marissa said, giving us a wicked grin. Oh, thats good. But I got a better one: my foot up your ass. Mae said, getting in her face. Oh, Im so scared. Marissa said, acting like she was scared, then chuckling. Face it, Mae: youre not as scary as you look. You wanna see scary? Mae asked, giving her a villainous smile, before punching Marissa on the corner of her mouth. She fell down and I watched Carly grab Maes arms. Shes not worth it, Mae. she said in Maes ear. Mae dusted herself off, as Marissa lay on the floor, starstruck. Next time: itll be more than a single punch. Mae said, spitting down towards Marissa and following us out the door. We quickly hopped into the car and the drive home was silent and awkward. Im sorry, guys; I ruined the night. Mae said after a while. No, its okay, she deserved it. Carly said. Tell me again, why you hate her? Carter asked. Its complicated. I said, as I looked out the window into the darkness of night. I zoned out, as Carly explained to Carter the story... Marissa, Mae, Carly, and I were all best friends in grade school and then it quickly became a high school story: she got popular and left us. Her new friends brainwashed her to someone different. We didnt like the new Marissa, so we treated her the same way she treated us, with hate. Carter stopped at Maes house and I got into my car and followed him down the road, until he went down Kings and I went home down Allswell. I parked the car in the driveway and went inside, threw myself onto my bed, and quickly fell asleep. It was a long day, and an even longer night. I woke up to the smell of smoke, but I didnt know what was happening until my room was engulfed in flames!
