Charity Martitia Lipps, Zebulons wife, was the daughter of Jonathan Lipps and Martha Church. She was a descendent of Johann Lipps who arrived in America from Switzerland in 1750. He disembarked the ship, Phoenix, in Philadelphia, and journeyed to Rowan County, N.C. and settled. It is through the Lipps line that we have a Revolutionary War ancestor. My great aunt, Oma, remembered her grandmother Charity well and told of how she would come to visit them sitting up on horseback riding sidesaddle. It took several of the family to get her on and off. When Grandma Charity (who smoked a pipe) got too old to sit on a horse, shed have the boys hitch her up to a farm sled and she would ride to her destination that way!
