Charles-François Gounod was born in Paris on 17 June 1818 to a pianist mother and an artist father. His mother was his first teacher. In 1839, he won the Prix de Rome. During Gounods years in Rome he studied Palestrina. Upon returning home he seriously considered joining the priesthood, but decided against it before taking the Holy Orders. In 1854, Gounod completed a Messe Solennelle, also known as the Saint Cecilia Mass, one of Leon (and Diana) Berliners favorite pieces. He is, perhaps best known as the composer of the opera Faust and as the writer of Funeral March of a Marionette which was made popular on Alfred Hitchcocks Presents. Something tells me that today is an Alfred Hitchcock sort of day... Enjoy!
