Check out Kenyas hit #agricultural reality television show, Shamba Shape UP, a farm makeover TV show with an estimated audience of more than 11 million viewers around East Africa. “Shamba” means “farm” in Swahili, and the shows Kenyas first “extreme makeover: farm edition” TV programme that guides small-scale farmers on topics like improved pest management, irrigation, cattle rearing, poultry keeping, financial education, crop management techniques, ect.. in an engaging and informative way. In each episode, experts from the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the African Agricultural Technology Foundation (AATF) visit farms needing a helping hand, to give both farmers and viewers the tools needed to improve productivity and increase income on their farms. During each episode, viewers are prompted to submit their addresses to obtain a free pamphlet on the week’s topics. The show was initially funded by USAID - US Agency for International Development, but now has a whole host of sponsors, and is so popular that versions are being made for Tanzania, Uganda, and Rwanda.
