Check out this article. According to the Guardian (a British newspaper that has been largely involved in the NSA surveillance debacle), new documents released under the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) reveal that America came dangerously close to a nuclear holocaust in 1961. According to these recently declassified documents, two Mark 39 hydrogen bombs were accidentally dropped over Goldsboro, N.C., after a B-52 bomber broke up in midair. One of the two bombs behaved exactly in the manner of a nuclear weapon in wartime, with its parachute opening and its trigger mechanisms engaged. Only one low-voltage switch prevented a cataclysmic disaster that would have engulfed Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia and even New York City with the detonation and consequent fallout. This nuclear weapon would have been 260 times more powerful than the device that devastated Hiroshima -- yet a simple switch prevented a terrible catastrophe. It is clear that Providence intervened to prevent such a horrible event from occurring in our United States of America. Because of our errant, inherent humanity, accidents happen -- but some accidents are colossal. Praise God for His unending Providence and awesome power! God bless America!
