Check out this excellent article and try to figure out where you fall on the spectrum. Why? Heres why. I have what are commonly referred to as deep sockets and deep sockets limit hip mobility because the socket acts like a tube sock over the ball of the femur head. Ive studied my own x-rays and compared them to others, I know myself, I know basic anatomy, I know my limits. A few years ago I took several workshops with a genuinely brilliant and totally genius stretch guru and while at his 6 day course down on Grand Cayman (a bunch of you were there and you might remember this exchange) he had me in an assisted center split and as he applied pressure to increase my range, I kept telling him there was no more to be had. He finally reached around and felt my adductors and was surprised to feel that they were loose and not on stretch at which point he agreed the restriction was in my socket and then came his advice. You can remodel your socket. Out of respect for his genius and for the peaceful continuation of his workshop in progress, I respectfully declined to be taught his approach for socket remodeling and he, the gracious soul that he is, let it go at that. Why dont I want my sockets remodeled? Because in my many cadaver anatomy classes (the same information is also available via Google, yall) Ive learned what bone tends to do under increased stimulation and I would never do anything that would encourage the problems that can result from beyond-optimal bone stimulation. Because over 3 surgeries, I watched Dr. Grossmith saw a ton of damage out of Jameys spine that resulted from, among other things, too much bone stimulation. Because, from her dance career, Heidis hips are full of the damage of too much bone stimulation. How many other friends and clients have similar hip socket problems? A ton and if you multiply that by about a gazillion (math alert!) youve got the idea of how and why the general population has such trouble with hips. Remodel my bathroom maybe but not my hip sockets. My sockets are fine just like they are and fortunately, a center split is not a requirement of my - or hardly anybodys - everyday functional movement. Basic anatomy and its unique function in YOU is the most important safety information you can have. If you dont know it, why do you expect others to and how comfortable are you - especially after seeing the comparison photos in this article - abdicating to others the basic safety and function of your own body? Dorothy only had lions, tigers and bears but us, weve got Pilates and Yoga and Crossfit. Oh. My.
