Today is our sixth day of band showcases from our First Gear Compilation, which you can download for free at stickshiftrecords.bandcamp/ We’ve hit the first Vermont band on the compilation – Get A Grip. Get A Grip are part of a long line of excellent hardcore bands from Vermont. From Drowningman to My Revenge to Crucial Times, and now to Get A Grip (and a lot of other excellent hardcore bands I am not mentioning), VT has continued to produce on the hardcore front for nearly 20 years. In terms of Get A Grip, they are a band who strike a great balance of loud and fast with chug chugging breaks and heavy grooves. They’re a solid and aggressive act that is, by some measures, a face melting hardcore band if there ever was one – and they even throw in a great sing along chorus once in a while, like in Words of Hate, their track on the comp. And their songs are about social issues in the world, keeping the good tradition of politically aware and radical hardcore alive. Get A Grip remind me a bit of Good Clean Fun. For real. They play short, generally fast, politically charged hardcore with full and heavy guitars, and they throw in slow, floor stomping hardcore breaks once in a while that keep things interesting. When I listen at home, I often find myself nodding my head along to Get A Grip’s tunes, the same way the gal whose been around the hardcore scene for forever does at shows with her arms crossed in the back of the room. But they aren’t just a straightforward hardcore band. There’s a twist. Get A Grip are channeling classic thrash punk – even as I compare them to Good Clean Fun, they are clearly channeling bands like Municipal Waste and Suicidal Tendencies. And they do this well, like the old lady medium in The Others, except that she is channeling little kids’ ghosts. All in all, if you like hardcore at all, I would put money down that you’ll like Get A Grip. Check out their full length, and their recent split with It’s a BEAR on their bandcamp page.
