Chemistry Record COMMON LABORATORY APPARATUS 1. Test tube :- Test tubes are of various sizes, but most chemical tests are performed in glass tubes which are 15 cm long and 1.5 cm in diameter 2. Boiling Tube :- a test tube which is made up of hard glass is called a boiling tube. As the name suggests a boiling tube s used for strong heating of substances .It s bigger than a test tube and is 18 cm long and 2.5 cm diameter 3. Test tube Rack:- It is a wooden or plastic structure , used to keep test tubes. Washed test tubes are kept inverted for draining water while others are kept upright. 4. Test tube holder:- A test tube holder is used for holding test tubes over a flame for longer and stronger heating . It is made of two iron ;iclamps, a long metallic rod, and a wooden handle. A screw s used for tightening the clamps. 5. Funnel:- a funnel is made up of plastic or glass. It is used to transfer a liquid from one con-tainer to another. 6. Measuring Cylinder :-It is a tall cylinder made of Thick glass. It is marked in ml. Measuring cy-linders should never be used for heating purposes. They are avail-able in various capacities such as 50 ml,100ml,250ml,500ml and 1000 ml. They are used to meas-ure a definite volume of liquid. 7. Watch Glass :-It is a concave plain glass usually used in flame tests for mixing salt and acid. 8. Spatula:- It is a small spoon made up of iron and is used for transferring powdery substances from one container to another. 9. Tripod Stand :-It is made up of cast iron and is used to support pieces of apparatus over a gas burner. 10. Wire Gauze :-It s made up of iron wire fitted with asbestos sheet. The gauze spreads the heat of the flame over the bottom of the apparatus uniformly and thus reduces the chances of cracking. 11. China Dish It s also known as evaporating dish. It is made of china clay and is used for strong heating. 12. Beaker They are of different shapes and sizes and are used for heating liquids in large quantities. 13. Flasks They are of various shapes and sizes: • Round Bottom Flask This is used for heating liquids 13. Flasks They are of various shapes and sizes. • Round bottom flask This is used for heating liquids. • Flat bottom flask It has flat bottom which is the cause for its name. It is also used for heating purposes • Conical Flask It is conical in shape and has a short neck It should not be used for heating. It is used for volumetric analysis. 14. Bunsen Burner It is a very important and useful apparatus in a laboratory. It is used for heating purposes. It works with the help of gas and burns at the top. It mainly consists of three parts. I. BASE OF THE BURNER It is a metallic piece found at the bottom of the burner and is connected to a gas tube. There is an air regulator at its base which can be used to adjust the flame of the burner. II. BURNER TUBE It is a very long metallic tube having air holes at the lower end. These air holes are covered by a knob which can be turned to adjust the entry of air through the air holes which can be used to make the flame bright or dull. III. AIR REGULATOR It is a mechanism provided in Bunsen burner for controlling air supply.
