Cherokee, Chickasaw, Shawnee,Choctaw, we can still feel the power - TopicsExpress

Cherokee, Chickasaw, Shawnee,Choctaw, we can still feel the power in the names of the peoples. Cheyenne, Arapaho, Navajo,Cree, we mourn the loss of the traditional Native American way of life. . We feel guilt by association for the crimes our ancestors committed in their genocide, and long for a simpler world with a personal relationship to nature that their way of life represents. Illinois, Iowa, Omaha, Miami, we kept the names but banished the people from the places they once lived and loved. Innumerable tribes and bands speaking over a thousand languages, we are haunted by the memory of their destroyed villages, envying the comfort of the sense of belonging they must have shared around their campfires. We chafe at the harness of modern civilization, tired and broken horses hitched to covered wagons filled with our possessions, dreaming we are mustangs running free across the plains. And where is our wagon train heading? Not to the promised land of plenty. Our scouts tell us that the pass is blocked, no time to turn around and no way to get through. We have to find a different way. Lets circle the wagons, call this home. Lets plant gardens and tend them together, build communities where we help each other, and share with each other.Lets learn to listen to this living planet, learning from the wisdom of nature rather than exploiting it for profit. Let the period of mourning be over and a new day dawn when we honor the lives of Native Americans with our lives. Lets go native.
