Cherokee Negro 882 In researching for this post I learned - TopicsExpress

Cherokee Negro 882 In researching for this post I learned something also, (no big surprise there), 882 was bred by the C.E. Yoakum Estate so he was born after Mr. Cy’s death. I had thought that Mr. Cy passed in the late 60’s. 882 was calved in 1963 and was used by Cherokee before going to Dr. Mckellar. Doc got several of his daughters in the deal. 882 also immediately became Doc’s main herd bull. I remember seeing Dr. Mckellar’s first production sale catalog and all those beautiful, dark red 882 daughters in there. He also produced some really good herd bulls also. 1/289 and 1/609 are 2 prime examples. He also produced the daughters that were the great base for Dr. Mckellar’s and Tom Deans herds along with many other herds. From the first picture I ever saw of 882 until I went to Miss Emily’s and saw 3X 55, 57, 100, and Kojika I thought he was the best red bull out there and he sure proved himself in his production. In the 1980’s and 90’s his breeding got pretty diluted in a lot of herds by the 80’s import bulls but he helped keep those cattle good as well. His bloodlines stayed in a lot of herds that didn’t breed those import bulls though so it was still out there in some strength. If you have Red Brahman cattle today I bet many of them would trace back to him, even the HK, 3X and Santa Elena herds bred some of the bloodline. He was triple bred *Rio Negro, plus tracing to *Arauto and *Aimore, and was a son of the great Clifford Brothers Rio King 730 bull so there are a lot of similar bloodlines out there but I still think that 882 was the cream of the crop. Even now 50 and ½ years after he was calved, I would not hesitate to use him given the chance. I know there are some truly GREAT red cattle out there today in a lot of herds but I can’t see where having some of his daughters would be a setback. If you look back at some of those old cattle from the 50’s and 60’s and even into the 70’s you will surely see that Mr. Cy, and Clifford Brothers knew how to breed red cattle. Of course Sloan Williams and Bubba Hudgins weren’t doing badly either until they decided to sell the reds and concentrate on the grays. I remember the sale catalog from Bubba’s dispersal also and how awesome those red and speckled cattle looked. If I remember correctly Bubba ended up with a pretty awesome average on those cattle for the time also. I sure would love to have had the opportunity to ride through the pastures with Mr. Cy and with the Clifford’s when their herds were at their best and to have spent a day just talking to them about their cattle. It sounds corny I know but at this point in my life that would have been worth more to me than money. Of course, I have neither so it doesn’t matter lol. Hopefully, someone will have a good picture of the 882 bull they can post with this article. If you have stories about these breeders, please post those also.
