Chew on this one for a second. In the narcissistic family, the child is placed in the communications structure of the Double Bind, or the no-win predicament. If he assumes responsibility for the fact that he does not feel loved for who he really is, the child is rewarded with parental love and attention but of a (malattuned sort). That is the source of shame -- his assuming responsibility for apparently not being lovable. However, if he maintains his assertive stance, holding on to the integrity of his own perception and his own internal state he is punished with parental and attention and withdrawal.
