Chiefly treat for Dr Luveni The Minister for Women was given a Samoan chiefly treat last Friday as commendation for her ministerial role in promoting women and their needs. Pan Pacific South East Asia Women’s Association Samoa branch members flew in a delegation from Apia last week to bestow Dr Luveni the honour. Association member and Samoa Early Childhood Teachers Association, UilaLeota said they accorded Dr Luveni the ceremony because she helped promote women’s issues globally as a government minister. “She has done a lot. She is a role model to the women of the Pacific,” Mrs Leota said. Dr Luveni was accorded the solemn traditional thanksgiving ceremony, which Mrs Leota said was only done to paramount chiefs, kings and queens. The fa’aaloaloga (presentation of gifts) ceremony at the Novotel Suva Lami Bay hotel, accompanied by a chant, saw Dr Luveni presented a roasted pig carried on a platform on the shoulders of four men, a teenage girl presented her with a husked green coconut and frond (vailolo and tuaniu) and a tray of roasted chicken (suatalisua), and a special finely woven mat that is the most important item of cultural value in Sāmoa.
