Child Rights Activist Bright Appiah on the state of borstal homes in Ghana According to the policy of the state for prisoners and juveniles, government is supposed to give them money every day for feeding allowance. Junior correctional centres however do not receive feeding allowance at all. They have adopted other means of raising money for children which is not sustainable. Children have the right to education even when they are incarcerated. The basic needs for children do not exist in Osu Childrens Home. They dont even have pad, so have to resort to other means to help themselves at the end of the month. Statutory provisions have been made but are not being made available to them I dont understand why government doesnt provide feeding. We had a meeting with social welfare and made the findings known to them. If we dont hear anything from them, we intend taking it further. We hope they will respond to this particular issue. They said they were taking steps to address the education issues. In relation to feeding, they themselves are disturbed by what is going on. I havent spoken to the minister but Im sure after the meeting, the minister will be briefed about it. -Bright Appiah
