Chinas Environmental Protection Minister Zhou Shengxian asserted China had met its 2014 targets for control of water and air pollution, Reuters reported, citing state media. Zhou told an annual government meeting that authorities last year banned 7 million high-emission vehicles from the road and shut down 50,000 coal-fired furnaces, installed denitrification and desulfurisation equipment in power plants and factories and added new sewage treatment plants, according to a Xinhua report that was released shortly before the air quality reading from the US embassy in Beijing hit a hazardous 545 on a scale in which a maximum reading of 30 is considered safe.
