Christmas 2013 Dear Friends, Yes, I know it is April…I - TopicsExpress

Christmas 2013 Dear Friends, Yes, I know it is April…I purposely delayed this letter because, I knew there was good news in the form of college acceptance letters/emails coming on March 27th. So, I thought I would just wait and include the news now versus waiting until December. Please see the Zachary paragraph for details… Severin is graduating May 10, 2014 from Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama. It has been a wonderful experience for him on a number of different levels with the most recent being his involvement with his fraternity, Sigma Chi: sigmachi.org/. He is the Consul this year and enjoys the mission and the work with the newer frat members. He played rugby again this year. I went down to see him in October and after four years, I am beginning to understand some aspects of the game! He did an internship at a school for autistic children in Mobile during the fall semester. He enjoyed the experience immensely and definitely learned a great deal – see this article from the Spring Hill website: .shc.edu/news/2013/11/15/severin-chambers-%E2%80%9914-rugby-star-mentors-special-needs-children The future is still up in the air…no decisions yet, but I have asked him to work at the summer camp again as our Waterfront Director. Zachary is graduating June 5, 2014 from St. Sebastian’s School. Yes, two graduations, 1500 miles apart within three weeks… This has been a busy year for Zach - he finished his final year of varsity football in November. He loves the sport, but has essentially hung up his cleats as he doesn’t think he will play in college. He continues to do very well in school in his AP and honors classes. He spent the summer taking Calculus 1 online through a local community college which he, of course, aced and found rather simple. Recently, he was recognized by the National Achievement Scholarship Program for scoring in the top 3 percent on the PSAT/NMSQT. He received a certificate from the National Achievement Scholarship Program and his name and undergraduate major choice were sent to 1,500 colleges and universities. Only 3,100 out of 160,000 Black American students receive this extraordinary honor. Needless to say, he has received hundreds of letters from colleges all over the U.S., Canada, and Europe. And, speaking of colleges…the results are in…He wanted Yale but was denied – their loss! His other Ivy League choices – Dartmouth accepted him and Columbia waitlisted him; he was accepted at all of his other choices - Fordham, Boston College, Holy Cross, Johns Hopkins, Loyola Maryland, Duke, Amherst College and, Meyer’s alma mater, Xavier University of Louisiana. And, the one other Ivy League he applied to and will be attending is Harvard! We’re praying for a great package, but it doesn’t matter. He’s going to Harvard! He’ll be close to home and yet, I doubt we’ll see much of him. He turned 18 in December and went to a casino a few days later with his father and brother in Rhode Island…that apple sure didn’t fall far from that tree! Meyer continues to do all those jobs he’s done for many years now. There is no slowing down for him. His choirs are doing great and he is enjoying the work with these different and unique groups! My work hasn’t changed since last year. I love my new office and the staff I work with. The fundraising has been constant and for those who know me even just a little, you would be surprised to hear that my most successful event was our Fall Fashion Show…My knee is doing wonderful…why I didn’t have the replacement surgery five years sooner is beyond me at this point. I did a 25 mile bike race in September and as I expected, everything but my knee hurt when I finished the race! Next year, I’m going to try the 50 mile race! The travel section…we all flew to the Bahamas after Christmas and spent the week on Grand Bahama Island enjoying the warm weather, time together and our 25th wedding anniversary. It was a great day with dinner out with the boys and Severin’s girlfriend, Rachael, who joined us for part of the week. Toward the end of the week we went to a beautiful beach in the Lucayan National Park, named after the Indians who lived on the island. The weather was beautiful and Meyer and I just looked out at the blue water and commented that there was a Nor’Easter (major snowstorm) going on at home with our offices shut down for two days as more than a foot of snow fell and temperatures dropped to single digits with wind-chill temperatures below zero…In between the guilt we were feeling, we’re thankful to have wonderful neighbors who took the snow blower out of the garage and cleaned up our house and driveway and then went up and down the street helping the other neighbors and even turned our heat up before we came home. Meyer and I went to St. Maarten in August again this year. It was a perfect week of snorkeling, reading and relaxing and we’re working on a trip after the graduations. Enjoy the rest of the year! Beth, Meyer, Severin and Zachary
