Chrysler refuses to recall 2.7 million Jeeps Chrysler is defiant: Contrary to demands made by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the carmaker is refusing to recall 2.7 million Jeeps over dangers arising from its fuel tanks. According to the NHTSA, the design and positioning of the tanks could lead to vehicles setting on fire after a rear-end collision. There is said to have already been 37 of such accidents, claiming the lives of 51 people. Chrysler, however, rejects the NHTSA’s comments. The tanks in the affected vehicles - Jeep Grand Cherokees made between 1993 and 2004 and Jeep Libertys manufactured between 2002 and 2007 - were installed in line with the legal requirements and do not represent an unreasonable safety risk, says the US carmaker. Chrysler says that the cases of fuel tanks catching fire after rear-end collisions are extremely rare and only account for a small amount of all traffic accidents that result in fatalities. While Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne insists the quality of the vehicles is high, the NHTSA said that it hopes the carmaker will have a rethink over its reluctance to recall the affected models for the sake of its customers.
