Churchill River 2014 A quick report on our 14 day 385 km canoe trip down the Churchill River SK from Ile-a-la Crosse to Missinipe from July 20 to August 2. The team included Vancouverites Bob Rieder, Lorne Rieder, and Bob Rebagliati, Michael Hartley from Maple Bay Vancouver Island, Rudi Hrdlicka from Port Carling ON, and Jan (Hensa) Kral from Czech Republic. While Rudi and Hensa included the excursion as part of a larger 2 month car trip across Canada and back, the BC quartet traveled through the night to and fro like 20 year olds in order to meet obligations at both ends of the trip. Given the vagueries of wilderness travel, it is remarkable that we finished on schedule. Good weather and fortune greatly assisted our drive to complete. Thanks to the guidance and instruction of our 2 Czech maestros we were able to paddle through 75% of the 36 rapids en route whereas we had planned to portage 75% because of our lack of experience in reading and running class 2+ and class 3 rapids. The lakes and rivers were beautiful under blue skies and reasonable winds. The conviviality was exceptional. We were privileged to pass through this country and with this team of men.
