The Norwegian Consulate General in New York has jurisdiction over and is obliged to assist Norwegian citizens with consular matters in the following US states: New York State, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, North and South Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, and the islands of Bermuda. Norwegian honorary consulates are located in Chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, Norfolk, Charleston, Atlanta, and Hamilton (Bermuda). We would like to draw your attention to the “Household Preparedness Guide” which the City of New York has prepared for its citizens. The guide does not refer to New York City in particular and may, therefore, be used as a general emergency resource wherever you are living. The guide is available HERE. You can also obtain contingency plans from your local authorities. In addition, we would advise you to keep yourselves updated about the current situation through the local media and to follow any instructions given by your local police/authorities. Ensure that your passport and your family’s travel documents are valid at all times. Please be aware that the Norwegian foreign service can only provide advice only – not instructions - on what to do in an emergency. In the event of an evacuation you should follow the instructions of your local authorities. They will give you direct warnings and detailed instructions through the media. In situations where evacuation is not mandatory, it is up to you to decide what precautions to take, usually in consultation with your own network (e.g. employer, organization, institution etc.) It is also our duty to inform you that the Norwegian authorities are not liable for any expenses that may incur during an emergency situation or evacuation – whether mandatory or not. However, a loan to cover necessary travel expenses may be granted in return for a declaration of reimbursement. The Norwegian Consulate General cooperates closely with the Norwegian Seamen’s Church at 317 East 52 Street, New York. In the event of an emergency situation that allows us and the Seamen’s Church staff to remain in our premises, we intend to have a representative present in the church to assist the Norwegian community with practical questions that may arise together with the church’s own staff. Our representative will be in continuous communication with the emergency staff on duty at the Consulate General. The Consulate General will issue travel documents, establish contact with relatives in Norway, provide information about the current situation and any measures taken by the Norwegian authorities etc. Should a serious emergency arise in other areas under our jurisdiction the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is prepared to send an emergency contingent to help the emergency team from New York, support our honorary consulates and render practical assistance to Norwegian citizens on the spot.
