City makes good progress with construction of its new rental units in Hangberg Page Content Construction of the City of Cape Town’s new Community Residential Units (CRUs) in Hangberg is taking shape and good progress has already been made. Construction started six months ago with the blasting of the giant boulders which were situated on the site. This was necessary to reduce the size of the boulders dramatically. The first phase of the development consists of three multi-storey blocks comprising 71 units in total. Construction on the first block, which entails 26 units, is progressing well. It is expected that the brickwork on the first floor should be completed to roof height this week. Construction of the foundations of the other two blocks of flats is expected to start soon. This phase of the project costs approximately R34 million. The City purchased four sites in Hangberg for the provision of subsidised accommodation in the form of City rental stock. Construction is underway on two of these sites. The City has 200 existing rental units in Hangberg and the development of the first two sites zoned General Residential will immediately provide an opportunity for the City to build 142 City rental units in close proximity to employment opportunities, key transport routes, social amenities and schools within the existing surrounding area. The City’s rental development project will provide a safe and clean living space for the families of Hangberg, which will include grassed and play areas in an enhanced landscaped environment. ‘Without the support of the community, we cannot make progress possible. The new CRU rising in Hangberg is symbolic of the redress, empowerment and transformation that we want to enable in this impoverished community. Hangberg remains a top priority for the City and we will do everything in our power to increase service delivery and opportunities in this area. We urge the community to continue to work with us,’ says the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Human Settlements, Councillor Siyabulela Mamkeli. Published by the City of Cape Town.
