Civic Square Christmas tree gets the axe! By Henry Belot Canberra Times Reporter -------- It seems public servants arent the only ones facing the axe in Canberra this Christmas. A much loved feature of Christmas celebrations in Canberra – the giant government-owned Christmas tree installed in Civic Square each year – has been retired by ACT Chief Minister Katy Gallaghers festive elves. The axing of the ageing 21-metre-high tree was announced on Tuesday morning along with a swathe of other Christmas details including a world record attempt at Christmas light decorations in Petrie Plaza. A much smaller 10-metre high tree will be erected on City Walk alongside a lights display and activities coordinated by Canberra CBD Limited. It is currently unknown what fate awaits the giant Christmas tree and whether it will be rubbished alongside other ageing decorations and unwanted festive gifts. The lighting of the tree has traditionally marked the beginning of festivities in Canberra, but this year the season will be launched when Ms Gallagher turns on the lights in Petrie Plaza on November 28. canberratimes.au/act-news/civic-square-christmas-tree-gets-the-axe-20141125-11t7lx.html
