Civil society members proposed military takeover in 2006. I was at a dinner party at the home of Barrister Rokonuddin Mahmud sometime late in 2006. It was attended by most of the civil society members who are today demanding that the upcoming elections be stopped. The BNP had rewritten the voters list with 1 crore 40 lakh false voters and had rigged local elections including Dhaka-10. We were discussing what would happen if the Awami League boycotted the elections. One of the “eminent” persons who were in the roundtable the other day suggested then that the Army could take over. I was astonished. I argued that this was completely unconstitutional. Most of them murmured in response, but did not quite agree with me. I did not know at that time, but after 1/11 we came to realize that is what they had planned all along. They had let their plan slip that night in front of me. Today these same people are attempting the same thing all over again. We have to put an end to this. We should never deviate from our constitution again. Our Opposition has raised this scope by boycotting a free and fair election. Their entire goal was to make this election controversial to create the opportunity for yet another “third force”. Do not let them succeed. The only way to stop that from happening now is to vote. These elections are not perfect, but they are the only way to prevent a constitutional vacuum. Now it is up to you to show your support for upholding the constitution. If you do not want to leave any scope for an unconstitutional takeover, come out and vote. Also come out and vote for the government that has taken Bangladesh further than any other government since 1975. If you believe Bangladesh and you personally are better off than five years ago, come out and vote. Show your appreciation for all our hard work. We will return it by continuing to make Bangladesh and your lives better. Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu! সুশীল সমাজের লোকেরা ২০০৬ সালে সামরিক বাহিনীর ক্ষমতা দখলের প্রস্তাব করেছিলো। ২০০৬ সালের শেষ ভাগের কোন এক সময় আমি ব্যারিস্টার রোকনউদ্দিন মাহমুদের বাসায় রাতের খাবারের আমন্ত্রণে গিয়েছিলাম। এখন যেসব সুশীল সমাজের লোকেরা আসন্ন নির্বাচন বন্ধ করতে দাবী জানাচ্ছেন তারা প্রায় সকলেই সেই আমন্ত্রণে উপস্থিত ছিলেন। বিএনপি জালিয়াতির মাধ্যমে ১ কোটি ৪০ লক্ষ ভুয়া ভোটার দিয়ে একটা ভোটার তালিকা তৈরি করেছিলো এবং সেই সাথে তারা স্থানীয় সরকার নির্বাচনসহ ঢাকা-১০ উপনির্বাচনে ব্যাপক কারচুপি করেছিলো। আমরা আলাপ-আলোচনা করছিলাম যে আওয়ামী লীগ নির্বাচন বর্জন করলে কী হতে পারে। গতদিনের গোলটেবিল বৈঠকের একজন বিশিষ্ট ব্যক্তি তখন সামরিক বাহিনীর ক্ষমতা দখলে নেয়ার কথা প্রস্তাব করেছিলো। আমি বিস্মিত হয়েছিলাম। আমি যুক্তি দেখিয়েছিলাম যে এটা সম্পূর্ণ অসাংবিধানিক। এদের অধিকাংশই তার প্রতিক্রিয়ায় গুঞ্জন শুরু করলো, কিন্তু আমার সাথে পুরোপুরি একমত হলো না। আমি তখন এর কিছুই জানতাম না, কিন্তু ১/১১ এর পর আমি বুঝতে পারি যে তারা সবাই কিসের পরিকল্পনা করছিলো। তারা সেই রাতে আমার সামনে তাদের পরিকল্পনা ভুল করে ফাঁস করে দিয়েছিলো। আজ আবারও সেই একই লোকগুলো একই অপতৎপরতা পুনরায় চালাচ্ছে। আমাদের এই জিনিসটা থামাতে হবে। আমাদের আর কখনোই সংবিধান থেকে পথভ্রষ্ট হওয়া চলবে না। আমাদের বিরোধীদল একটি অবাধ ও সুষ্ঠু নির্বাচন বয়কট করে এই সুযোগ তৈরী করেছে। তাদের মূল উদ্দেশ্য হলো নির্বাচনটিকে বিতর্কিত করে আরেকটি তৃতীয় শক্তিকে সুযোগ করে দেয়া। তাদের সফল হতে দিবেন না। এটি বিফল করার এখন একটিই রাস্তা আর তা হলো ভোট। সাংবিধানিক শুন্যতা তৈরি যেন না হয় তাতে, নিখুঁত না হলেও এই নির্বাচনের কোন বিকল্প নাই। আমাদের মহান সংবিধানকে সমুন্নত রাখার দায়িত্ব এখন সম্পূর্ণ আপনাদের উপর। আপনি যদি অসাংবিধানিক উপায়ে ক্ষমতা দখলের কোন সুযোগ দিতে না চান তবে, ভোটকেন্দ্রে যান এবং ভোট দিন। ভোট দিন সেই সরকার গঠনের পক্ষে যারা পচাত্তরের পরের যে কোন সরকারের তুলনায় দেশকে সবচেয়ে বেশি এগিয়ে নিয়ে গিয়েছে। আপনি যদি বাংলাদেশে বিশ্বাস করেন এবং আপনি ব্যক্তিগতভাবে মনে করেন যে আপনি পাঁচ বছর আগের যেকোন সময়ের তুলনায় ভালো আছেন তাহলে বের হয়ে আসুন এবং ভোট দিন। ভোটের মাধ্যমেই আপনাদের জন্য করা আমাদের ভালো কাজগুলোর প্রশংসা করুন। আমরা কথা দিচ্ছি, বাংলাদেশের সমৃদ্ধি এবং আপনার জীবনমানকে আরও উন্নত করে আমরা আপনার দেয়া ভোটের প্রতিদান দেবো । জয় বাংলা, জয় বঙ্গবন্ধু!
