Clarkton School of Discovery 20, Tar Heel 1 Baseball By Marsha Burney Jonathon Robinson went three-for-four at the plate to lead his Clarkton School of Discovery Blue Devils to a 20-1 win Wednesday afternoon over Tar Heel Middle School. All three of Robinsons hits were doubles. Holden Clark went the distance on the mound for Clarkton, pitching three innings. The game was called at the end of the third inning. Clarkton scored seven runs in the top of the first inning. Sincere Smith led off for the Blue Devils and beat out a sharp infield hit for a single. Smith stole second and then turned around and stole third. He scored on an error. Raeshoid Pone walked, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball, and scored when Robinson hit his first double of the game to deep right field. Robinson reached third on a passed ball and scored when Quinton Bedsole reached on an error. After Bedsole reached on the error, he stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch, and scored on another wild pitch. Pierce Melvin walked and stole second. Clark walked behind Melvin, and Greyson Heustess came in to run for him. Heustess stole second, and both he and Melvin scored when Dan Tatum reached on an error. Tatum scored when Smith hit his second single of the inning. In the bottom of the first, Tar Heel loaded the bases twice but couldnt pull out a run either time. Clarkton didnt score in the second, though Melvin got on base with a walk and stole second. He was left on base. In the bottom of the second, the Clarkton defense kept the Panthers scoreless, including a perfectly-executed double play. Clarktons second baseman, Quinton Bedsole, fielded a grounder and tossed the ball to Smith (at shortstop) who got the force out at second. Smith then fired a shot to first baseman Ty Watkins for the double play. In the top of the third, Clarkton scored 13 more runs. Clark led off for Clarkton with a single. Heustess came in again to run for Clarkon, and he stole second and moved to third on a passed ball. Tatum was hit by the pitch to reach first and then stole second. Both Heustess and Tatum scored when Smith reached on an error. Smith stole second and scored when Pone hit a double. Devan Stocks reached first on an error that moved Pone to third, and Stocks then stole second. Both Pone and Stocks scored on Robinsons double. The Panthers struggled to get control of the ball, and Robinson took third and home on the play. Melvin tripled to the fence in deep left field and scored after Watkins reached on an error. With Watkins on first, Clark and Tatum both walked to load the bases. Spencer Scott hit into a fielders choice that saw Brooks McGill (in to run for Clark) out at a third, but Watkins scored. Tatum moved to second on Scotts fielders choice, took third on a passed ball, and scored on another passed ball. Scott moved around the bases behind Tatum, and he, too, scored on a passed ball. Shy Pone walked and moved to second when Tanner Meares reached on a error. Shy Pone scored when Robinson hit his third double of the afternoon. With Meares on third and Robinson on second, Greyson Heustess walked to load the bases. Jacob Barber doubled to score both Meares and Robinson. Tar Heels lone run came in the bottom of the third after Michael Hepburn walked, stole second, and scored on Paul Gaticas double. The Clarkton defense was solid in the inning and turned their second double play of the game. Shortstop Spencer Scott snagged a pop-up and then caught the runner off second; Scott tossed it to Heustess for the second half of the double play. For the Blue Devils, Clark pitched all three innings, giving up three hits and one run. He walked three and struck out one. The three hits for Tar Heel came from Michael Hepburn (1-for-1, with a walk) and Paul Gatica (2-for-2, with a double). Leading hitters for Clarkton were Jonathon Robinson 3-for-4 with three doubles, Sincere Smith 2-for-3, Pierce Melvin 1-for-1 with two walks, Jacob Barber 1-for-1 with a double, Holden Clark 1-for-1 with two walks, and Tubbie Pone 1-for-2 with a double. The Blue Devils will play Elizabethtown Thursday afternoon in Elizabethtown for the final game of the season. Clarkton remains undefeated in conference play.
