Clean House Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. (Psalm 51:10, NIV) When I woke up yesterday, I walked around my home taking a mental inventory of what needed to cleared out. I thought about what needed to be removed not just physically or what could be seen with my eyes, but I also gave thought to the inventory of what was in my heart. What about you? When you evaluate your external surroundings, do you see things that you desperately need to get rid of? Are there things in your life that have worn out its welcome? It could be anything: toxic relationships, physical clutter or even bad habits. What about internally? Does your heart need a clean sweep as well? Is your spiritual disposition where it needs to be? If the answer is yes, cleaning house is in order. How do we get there? This task requires the assistance of the Master Cleaner. There is no mess too big for God to handle. Examine what you see externally and make a note of what needs to go. Then begin the task of getting rid of it. Next, begin to look internally. Through prayer, ask God to reveal the true disposition of your heart. Ask Him to show you the areas seen and unseen, where you need to focus on renewing a steadfast spirit. Barnes commentary says of the scripture Psalm 51:10, is an implication that David is praying for a heart that would be firm in the purpose of virtue; a heart that would not yield to temptation; that would carry out holy resolutions; that would be steadfast in the service of God. The word renew means to be or make new but also means rebuild and repair. As we prepare to head into a brand new year, be diligent about getting your house in order. Make the time to clean house both physically and spiritually so that you can be free of the bondage from holding on to things and issues way past their expiration date. God wants to move you in a direction to fulfill your purpose in Him. Let the prayer in Psalm 51:10 be yours today by asking God to renew a steadfast (right, constant, sincere) heart in you. Its time to clear out the old so God can do a new thing in your life. Its time to clean house! ~LPG
