Cleaned up my papa Smiths old Silver Belly finally - he died many years ago and my aunt was gonna throw out his Open Road style Silver Belly. This isnt a Stetson - its from a hat maker in Houston Shudde Bros in Tarrant co - the similar would be Peter Bros on Main St. This hat is circa 1930s/1940s. Papa was the printer at the state capitol from - oh I reckon the 30s until he retired - my great grandmother - Mother Grace was the daughter of Henry Berryman Terrell (hence my middle name) he was a state senator from the old 17th (Waco) then state comptroller then ran for governor in 1919/1920 but dropped out due to health enabling Pat Neff to become the nominee and ultimately Gov - he died at the Menger Hotel beside the Alamo in March 1920. Anyway - I told Aunt Muffett over my dead body - I held on to it all these years promising myself at 50 I would clean it up, rebuild and block it and bring it back in style - Im a few weeks from 51 - finally fulfilled that promise So what Yall think - does the silver belly Ike hat (some call LBJ) work?
