Clearly something had gone horribly wrong. There are economic repercussions to canceling an event like that that make my skin crawl. - Jon Stone, Bumbershoot booker We may never know exactly why the attempt of the Sasquatch! Music Festival to split like an amoeba and hope to form two completely identical yet separate entities did not succeed, but I wholeheartedly disagree with Pollstar editor-in-chief Gary Bongiovannis opinion that the July roster wasnt as strong as May. The May roster has a fraction of the amount of artists I want to see compared to the proposed July, and a lot more music I dont want to be anywhere around. July stuff I kinda wanted to see: New Order Broken Bells Atmosphere The Bloody Beetroots The Horrors Thao & The Get Down Stay Down Mikal Cronin Latyrx July stuff I really wanted to see: Kraftwerk (3D) Röyksopp + Robyn Neutral Milk Hotel Deltron 3030 The Notwist Of Montreal Carolina Chocolate Drops Audion Mac DeMarco Majical Cloudz Chad VanGaalen Demetri Martin Eugene Mirman (^ Most of whom Id never seen before ^) July stuff Id seen before and were good: Jon Hopkins Foxygen Sharon Van Etten Tegan and Sara Gold Panda Gogol Bordello Death The Black Angels John Grant Night Beats Kurt Vile & the Violators Compared to... May stuff I kinda want to see: Outkast M.I.A. Haim Ryan Hemsworth Tokimonsta Mogwai Band of Skulls Bob Mould Shakey Graves De La Soul May stuff I really want to see: Die Antwoord Violent Femmes Rodriguez The Growlers Deap Vally May stuff Id seen before and was good: Queens of the Stone Age Neko Case Elbow Phantogram Tune-Yards The Stepkids Austra Now, why the festival didnt just do like Coachella and split into two back-to-back weekends with identical line-ups, particularly when half of their ticket sales are Canadian and theres a Canadian holiday weekend (Victoria Day) the week before Memorial Day weekend in the US every year, thus making it easier for their entire supporting core to attend... That is the real question we should be asking Live Nation. How did they miss that obvious win? If they did that, they might have had two sold-out weekends in a row, and saved a butt-load of cash and heartache for everyone. Unfortunately, I put all my eggs in the July basket, and now I am devoid of eggs and baskets. Ive covered this festival for the last five years with my best friend and photographer Caily DiPuma. Seeing of Montreal there with her was one of the best musical moments of my life, one I was hoping to repeat when they played again this July. But now thats not going to happen, and they never play Vancouver, so I may never have the opportunity to see of Montreal live again. It makes me really sad to know Im not going to be at Sasquatch this year, may never attend Sasquatch again. Theres always hope for next year, but maybe the universe is just trying to tell me to move on with my life.
