Clemson quarterback Deshaun Watson left Saturdays game against Louisville with a broken bone in his right hand. The true freshman had won Clemsons starting QB job after a Week 3 loss against Florida State and entered Saturday as the nations leader in yards-per-attempt and Total QBR. Watson struggled early against Louisville, completing 2-of-6 throws for minus-5 yards and an interception. Watson appeared to injure the hand on a 9-yard scramble when his hand made contact with a defenders helmet. He stayed in for two more plays before trotting to the sideline, replaced by senior Cole Stoudt. At halftime, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said Watson suffered a broken finger, and the freshman was seen on the sideline in the second half with his hand wrapped beyond the wrist, pointing to the area above his thumb. Watson was the top-ranked dual-threat quarterback recruit in the 2014 class.
