Clendenin teens rescue five drowning kittens WOK - CLENDENIN, West Virginia - Michael Vance and Zachary Harper are best buddies. Theyre 8th graders at Elkview Middle School. Now, theyre being called heroes. This story starts after a man pulled over on the side of Thorofare Road, near where these two were hanging out. Vance said, He had picked up this white bag, and he just chucked it right into the river. Teenage boys are pretty curious, right? Well, things got even stranger when they heard sounds coming from the bag. Vance said, Little squeals, like crying. When the boys heard the crying, it didnt take long at all for Vance to jump into action. He said, I was already in the river, I was getting the bags. Harper pointed to the spot where they were standing. He said, Michael jumped from here all the way down into the river and got it. They opened these bags. Inside, were five tiny kittens. They werent even a week old yet. They rode their bikes back to Vances house, with the kittens tucked away in their shirts. I asked, Do you guys consider yourselves heroes? Vance said, No, not at all. Harper said, We were just doing what needed to be done. The two are animal lovers. The fact that someone would be so cruel as to do that. Times are tough, I understand that. But theres always a better answer than that. Always, said Vance. So, these two young men saved five little lives. They said the outcome for the kittens is the best one possible. They will be nursed back to health and they will be put up for adoption to good homes. So, Im glad for that, Vance said. The cats are being looked after, for now, by a rescue group called the Itty Bitty Kitty Committee. They should be available for adoption in the near future..
