Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team assists emergency services in East Cleveland Throughout Friday afternoon the teams Water Officer monitored the situation in East Cleveland. At 21:00hrs a rover carrying water rescue equipment and medical kit, along with swift water rescue personnel and a team paramedic, deployed to assist Cleveland Police and The North East Ambulance Service. Whilst assessing safe routes in and out of the area we were tasked to assist with a delivery van driver whose vehicle had become stranded in around 6 feet of water, he had managed to take refuge on the roof. Cleveland Fire and rescue were also deployed and were tasked to recover the driver whilst we stood by to provide medical cover. Following that incident and being tasked by NEAS we attended a lady who required medical assistance in East Cleveland. The ambulance service was in high demand and due to the road conditions we were able to respond quickly. After assessing the patient, we handed over to a NEAS road crew. Following this incident, and whilst moving to a standby location, we came across a number of motorists stranded in their vehicles on the outskirts of Skelton. The occupants were checked and we removed them to a place of safety. The vehicles involved were then moved to allow access for other emergency service’s as this was the only route available to them. Further checks of abandoned vehicles continued throughout the night. As water levels started to diminish in the early hours of Saturday the team remained on standby and eventually stood down some six hours after it had all started. The team currently remains on standby for any further incidents related to the weather. This was the team’s 54th call out this year.
