Climate Change OK, Ive been holding back on this topic for a while. Ive made a few comments here and there, particularly focused on showing that global warming predictions in the past have failed, and that the assumptions of the Chicken Littles are just baseless. Today, I only bring up this issue to make one critical point in this big discussion. When early humans were fighting for survival at the end of the Ice Age, when we had no fossil fuels or other greenhouse gas emissions, what human activity can we blame for the drastic increase in temperatures as the ice melted? You see, thats the big problem with the scientific effort to prove the need for regulations on industrial and economic activity. The very existence of such regulations requires that we assume that our activities on the planet are the cause of the changes in our climate. But similar increases in the planets temperature in the past had absolutely nothing to do with human activity. And that brings us back to the main point. What if we do all these things, eliminate all greenhouse gases, switch to electric cars powered by solar panels, ban all fossil fuels, etc., and the planet continues to get warmer? What will the scientists say then? Theres no PROOF that the changes in our global climate are directly caused by the greenhouse gases themselves, or by any other human activity. Certainly theres a correlation in time, and there MAY be a direct causal link. And I certainly believe that we humans should always do everything we reasonably can do to prevent damage to our environment. But we cant know for sure today that coal-powered energy plant emissions are truly the driving force behind higher polar temperatures. Cap-And-Trade regulations may simply be harmful to economic interests without any impact whatsoever on the climate change patterns we have experienced in recent years. I know there are those out there who will read this and laugh my comments off as being ignorant or uninformed. Beware. Ive read several of the most-cited scientific journal articles and the available underlying internet resources and study/survey data. Im no scientist, and I have no training in those matters. But I am a thinker, and I can spot holes in logic as quickly as anyone else. The science proves that human activity occurs at the same time that climate change has occurred. But it has not (and likely cannot) proven that one causes the other. And in light of the big-picture view of our planets history of cycling temperature ranges, its just hard for me to accept, without question, scientists assertions that recent warming trends are completely unrelated to the planets normal cycles weve observed from past history. With regard to Obamas new EPA regulations, I believe it is a disastrous and unnecessary act. Ive already described the information from Glenn Becks book, Cowards, in which Beck outlines George Soross involvement in this effort as a way to redistribute wealth around the globe. But from a more practical view, coal-fired energy plants are on the decline in any event. The EPA doesnt need to attack them to get rid of them. As solar power resources continue to grow, along with other cleaner-burning fuel sources, coal plants were already decreasing in number. As the chart in the link below shows, we lost roughly 80 coal and petroleum plants in the last ten years alone, without the new draconian regulations. In their place, other renewable power generation facilities nearly tripled in the same timeframe. The natural evolution of our technological infrastructure has already started the replacement of coal-powered electricity. Killing jobs at an artificially high rate and drastically increasing the costs of electricity around the country is simply stupid. So that is my rant on global warming and Obamas new EPA regulations. Ill try to not to spend much more time on it in the future, as its one of the least interesting parts of the recent political realm. eia.gov/electricity/annual/html/epa_04_01.html
