Clive Jackman and others, from last Sundays Radio Cabo Mil in English: The Mexican Secretariat for the environment and natural resources (SEMARNAT for its acronym in Spanish) published on its website the favorable resolution of the environmental impact manifestation, or MIA, for the mining company Los Cardones, which seeks approval to establish an open pit gold mining operation in an area located in the buffer zone for the Sierra de La Laguna Biosphere Reserve, near San Antonio BCS. It authorizes the opening of a perimeter of 400 by 100 hundred meters for the extraction of metal for 16 years, the area of land use change will be just over 506 hectares of which 300 are in the buffer zone of the protected area of the Sierra de La Laguna and the remainder outside the reserve. This comes after the project was presented over the past six years under the names Peredones Amarillos, Concordia and, finally, as Los Cardones.The State representative for SEMARNAT, Jose Carlos Cota Osuna reported that the resolution is in favor but it is conditional on a series of actions which include: the opinion of the National Protected Areas Commission (CONAMP), proof of ownership of the land, approval of the zoning change, permits from CONAGUA (the National Water Commission) and all municipal and state permits. The Los Cardones site is located in the municipality of La Paz.
