Coachs Game Report - Division 3 v Adelaide Souths 12 Def. Adelaide 2 (Mercy) Hawk Dome After back to back heartbreakers against 2 teams in the top 3, the 3rd tier lads rolled into Peregrine looking for a chance to get back into the winners circle and prevent an early trip to the knackers for season 2014/15. With Hutchy trying his luck at the Rooty Hill RSL, Baz trying to piece his calf back together and Simmo promoted up to the B team, the boys welcomed 4th tier superstars Whitey and Mocha into the lineup to take on the lads from Weigall. With Stato on the phone with SABL headquarters confirming that all required permits were in position, Pappas took control of the lads and joined Umpire Marino at the plate as the coaches were called to attention. Stato’s error of judgement immediately apparent as the plate meeting turned into a 10 minute discussion on the merits of fresh or dried pasta. Angels Coach Frick’s eventual suggestion that no one else gave a sh!t about this type of thing, and how about we just play Baseball, was immediately agreed to and with that Marino flipped the new pill to Nath Short and shouted play ball. After a regulation ground out to third commenced proceedings, back to back hits saw the scoreboard ticking over for the Angels immediately and only Batesy nailing an attempted steal and a K2 to end the inning prevented further damage. Fortunately for the good guys, the recent run of quality at bats continued and a lead off hit to Connor set the tone for some early scoring of their own. 4 walks and 2 more hits saw the Navy 3’s put up an early 4 spot and a bit of breathing room for Shorty to work back into match fitness. With Shorty holding the Angels scoreless in the top of the second, the good guys followed in the bottom half by sending 13 hitters to the dish. Pappas 2 hits and Mochas 2 HPB in the inning the highlight of a 6 hit, 7 run bottom half. In the 3rd Shorty’s tiring arm got the better of him allowing the Angels to claw one back for an 11-2 scoreline and the chance of an early beverage seemingly slipping away. Fortunately for our boys J Slee kicked off a 2 out rally in the bottom half producing the 12th run and after a conference call with Major League Baseball on the application of the mercy rule, Marino called an early end to proceedings. All in all a good team effort and with the W a glimmer of hope that the season can progress past the regular season. This weekend sees an absence of baseball due to Australia Day festivities which is just as well given the moans and groans of everyone in the change room after the game! There is a Div 4 game on Wednesday night, so if you can, get out to Goodwood to support their quest for a finals spot. Cheers Stato Hits Bates - 3 Paparella, J Slee - 2 C Oneil, Jennings, N Roebuck, Sc White - 1
