Coconut Oil Every month there seems to be a new superfood touted on TV talk shows and the Internet. Coconut oil seems to be the superfood of the moment. Proponents claim it promotes weight loss (Dr. Oz has promoted is as such on his show), prevent heart disease and diabetes, and cure Altzheimers. Most claims are unproven. Take weight control, for instance. The few human studies on the effects of coconut oil on body weight have had inconsistent results. Like all oils, coconut oil is high in calories - about 120 per tablespoon - so it would be counterproductive to consume large quantities in hopes of losing weight.
