Coldest Weather of the Season Expected Later This Week Baton Rouge (January 5) – The Louisiana Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (GOHSEP) is asking residents to prepare for the coldest weather of the season barreling across the U.S. The National Weather Service (NWS) expects a hard freeze in much of the state later this week. The freezing temperatures could last several hours. Weather experts say this system will bring frigid, arctic air to nearly everyone east of the Rockies. “Dangerous temperatures and wind chill values are expected with this winter blast. Watch for advisories from the National Weather Service, ALERT FM and your local media,” said GOHSEP Director Kevin Davis. “It is important to check on friends and loved ones who may need your assistance dealing with the freezing temperatures.” The National Weather Service recommends having this items available: *Flashlight and extra batteries; *Battery-powered NOAA Weather Radio and portable radio to receive emergency information; *Extra food and water such as dried fruit, nuts and granola bars, and other food requiring no cooking or refrigeration; *Extra prescription medicine; *Baby items such as diapers and formula; *First-aid supplies; *Emergency heat source: fireplace, wood stove, space heater, properly ventilated to prevent a fire; *Fire extinguisher, smoke alarm; test smoke alarms once a month to ensure they work properly and *Extra pet food and warm shelter for pets. GOHSEP will closely monitor the conditions and work with our state, local and federal partners on any requests for assistance.
