Colleagues, for those of you who were unable to make it to the - TopicsExpress

Colleagues, for those of you who were unable to make it to the debates tonight. Here attached is my speech for your persual. I have solid plans for the next academic year. Allow me to help you DEVELOP INTO THAT HOLISTIC LEGAL PERSON. Train up a child in the way he/she should grow and when they grow up, they will not depart from it. Train your legal person in the way it should grow and when you start to practise you will earn from it. Colleagues, the current board, Good night to you all. My name is Andrew Rodgers and I stand before you seeking your support to allow me to become the next Education and Mooting chairperson of the law society. I have observed something about my colleagues in the faculty, most of them are solely interested in doing exams, passing them and leaving the faculty for law school or they are not afforded the opportunity to explore their legal potential outside of examinations. I see a great problem in this as the requisite skills which we need to prosper in law school are acquired through practice. I want to provide a fun environment which will give my colleagues the opportunity to hone their legal art form. I am passionate about education and my vision is to see all my colleagues engaged in activities which will make them seasoned law students. Some of my plans for the next school year include the following: I will raise awareness on things occurring in the legal world so as to allow students to see how practical law is. Being the education and mooting chairperson I will be required to inform the student body of changes in university regulations which may affect their interest and other news I believe are beneficial to them. I have put myself in a position to be aware of certain things. A new initiative that I plan to execute is the mooting workshop. This is geared towards equipping students with the skills of advocacy, research and writing so they would be poised to try out for the international mooting course and also to compete in the Clarke Gittens mooting competition. I believe that once someone learns how to do something they will be more inclined to try applying what they have learnt. The lecturers are a part of our law family. I plan to engage them in helping to create an interactive legal environment, by partnering with them to host panel discussions, chair debates and also to help me secure professionals for the various events. I plan to host a legal mixer which will take the form, first of a career show case and will end in a meet and greet session where students can integrate with members of the legal fraternity. This will act as a form of inspiration to my colleagues and enable them to create links within the legal community. To make law come alive I plan to have occasional court visits so that my colleagues will be exposed to how the law operates in real time. As a firm believer in preparation I plan to have seminars for my third year colleagues on legal etiquette in the second semester so they will know what law school entails and how to prepare for it. Technology is an efficient resource. I will revamp the Facebook page, open the group and make it more interactive by posting articles, tips on exams and weekly motivational words to help students get though the semester. A twitter page called CAVE HILL EMC will also be created to provide an alternative for discussions and comments. This would promote critical thinking and writing. Colleagues will be free to express themselves and bounce their ideas off each other. All these activities seek to meet the lecture learning and examinations half way to provide a holistic learning environment for my colleagues. I am the best person to hold this post as I am passionate, organized and grounded. I am unrelenting in my pursuits as I am committed to make the time spent here at the faculty of law, an invaluable experience. I care about my colleagues. Serving them in this capacity is how I see myself contributing to their lives. These activities will help my colleagues to be inspired by their own potential and to strive to become better students as they will love and appreciate their craft. Colleagues, Allow me to help you, develop into that holistic legal person.
