Collegemen, The Great College is currently playing its final semi-final match in the 2014 Grace Shield Cricket Competition against bottom of the group Jonathan Grant High. The match is being played at JC. Put in to bat this morning on a well-prepared wicket by long-time JC custodian, Head, Jonathan Grant was skittled out for a mere 69 runs, with the JC captain claiming fine figures of 6 wickets for 14 runs! In response, at the time of this report, the Great College was on 198-7, a lead of 129 runs. The Great College MUST win this match to maintain hope of advancing to the finals as prior to the start of todays match they, along with Excelsior High were on 5 points each, with St. Jago leading the group with 7 points. Excelsior is currently playing Jago at St. Jago. This is the scenario: For JC to advance to the finals we must beat Jonathan Grant High and collect all 5 points. This will push our tally of points to 10. Also...Excelsior would need to draw with St. Jago and share the points...2 each. This would leave Excelsior on 7 points and St. Jago on 9. However, If Excelsior beats St. Jago they would also move to 10 points, the same as us. There would then be a play-off between them and us to determine a winner. If St.Jago grabs first innings from Excelsior, they collect 3 points and move to 10. A play-off would then ensue between us and them to determine a winner. If Jago beats Excelsior then it is all over for us as they would collect all five points and move to 12 ...and the finals. Lets say a prayer for Excelsior. On that matter, in our 2nd semi-final match against Excelsior last Tuesday-Wednesday (March 18-19), the game ended in a draw with JC collecting first innings points. Batting first, the Great College made 190 all out.
