Colouring books have never been so popular or so widely available while the events of last week highlight how a satirical magazine can be a source of great controversy. We all have a Charlie inside of us, be it Charlie Chaplin, Charlie Brown, Charlie Hebdo or Charlie, the French incarnation of Wheres Wally (- or Waldo)?. What do all these drawings and all these characters show us? How do they manage - through their visual power - to generate so much joy and so much hate? Even when swept together through a collective movement, we must become aware of the roots of our thoughts, sort through them and take responsibility for these thought-forms and ways of thinking that have an effect not only on our immediate surroundings but at a distance too. May this year which began in national mourning not deprive us of our capacity for all that is colourful: thats to say of our capacity for life, for what is beautiful, for sharing, for compassion and our hope for a humankind at peace with itself and respectful of its environment. Colouring and customising your own Charlie represents a little step taken towards optimism and creativity, overturning ignorance and hatred. Nathalie ALVAREZ Translate by Hannah Kilduff
