Comics writer-editor and historian Paul Castiglia will make a special personal appearance at the Superheroes For Hospice Charity Comic Book Sale on May 31, 2014. Event link: https://facebook/events/735888286442741/ Castiglia, a resident of Bloomfield will sell and autograph copies of comics-related projects to which he’s contributed, including Archie’s Weird Mysteries, Archie Americana, Hey Kids Comics, Sonic the Hedgehog, With Great Power and more. This appearance accompanies a slate of new projects for Castiglia ranging from writing new comic book stories to writing non-fiction text pieces to co-producing documentaries. Just released by IDW and Yoe Books is Felix the Cat Paintings, a colorful collection of art from Don Oriolo. Castiglia provided one of the book’s introductions, rubbing elbows with such noted animation historians as Jerry Beck, Mark Evanier and David Gerstein. Castiglia is also currently writing stories for two comic book series with loyal followings. For Blacklist Studios, Castiglia is penning a backup story for KING! The creation of writer Thomas Hall and artist Daniel Bradford, KING! tells the story of a former professional wrestler who fashions himself after a certain “King of Rock ‘n Roll” – and hires himself out as a monster hunter! When a shortage of goat stew rattles KING’s world, he finds himself face-to-face with a real, live goatsucker in a tale that could only be called, “El Chupacabra – Ay, Carumba!” Anvil Studios’ popular War of the Independents, created by Dave Ryan is a satirical sendup of such mainstream crossover events as Marvel’s Secret Wars and DC’s Crisis on Infinite Earths. Issue #4 is the “humor issue,” featuring such iconic indie characters as The Tick, Felix the Cat, Flaming Carrot, Gumby & Pokey, Megaton Man, Milk & Cheese and Too Much Coffee Man, among many others. Castiglia is co-writing with Ryan. “Paul’s history writing humor comics made him a natural for this assignment,” declared Ryan. “Even his DC Comics Showcase story, as action-packed as it was, was still a funny story first.” Also upcoming is Beyond Bullying, an all-star anthology of mainstream and indie writers and artists who’ve contributed stories with an anti-bullying theme. Proceeds from the special edition will benefit organizations with anti-bullying initiatives. Castiglia’s tale afforded him the opportunity to reunite with Chris Allan, artist for some of his past Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Sonic the Hedgehog tales. The story was edited by Erica Shultz, writer of the acclaimed M3 comic series. “I’m thrilled to be involved in new comic writing projects,” said Castiglia. “These stories have given me a chance to work on characters I love as well as creators whose work I admire.” Castiglia also revealed that he has a “standing invitation” to write a graphic novel for Rusty Gilligan’s Mac ‘n Trouble characters. “That’s something I look forward to doing some day,” he added. Castiglia’s article in Gemstone Publishing’s 2014 FCBD offering of Overstreet’s Comic Book Marketplace, a historical timeline of Archie’s venerable superheroes, The Mighty Crusaders is a precursor to a larger book project coming this fall from TwoMorrows Press. Castiglia, with Rik Offenberger will co-write and co-edit The MLJ Companion, a compendium of articles and interviews about Archie’s heroes. Castiglia continues to work on his non-fiction book, Scared Silly: Classic Hollywood Horror-Comedies. The book explores films where classic comedians like Abbott & Costello, the Three Stooges and the Bowery Boys got mixed up in spooky situations with ghosts, monsters and aliens. The project led to Castiglia’s latest role, as a Producer and Creative Consultant for a documentary on the Bowery Boys. “We are fortunate to have Paul join our production team,” said Colette Joel, CEO of Handshake Away Productions and Executive Producer of the film. “Paul’s knowledge of classic movie comedy coupled with his love for the Bowery Boys makes him an invaluable addition to the project.” Come by to the Superheroes For Hospice Charity Comic Book Sale, chat with Castiglia about all of the above, and pick-up a comic book, or two, to support Barnabas Health Hospice and Palliative Care Center.
