Coming back to the farm today I was met by a newborn lamb staggering along the dirt road, entirely on his own. I picked him up then saw another baby lying on its own. No ewes nearby and the babies are both too weak to bleat so its hard to find their mothers. One is malnourished and dehydrated (left in the photo), the other is dehydrated and with pneumonia. Ive taken them to the vet and he doesnt hold out much hope for the sick lamb but has given him antibiotics and anti-inflammatories. He cant feed because he is panting too hard so Im trying to get rehydrating fluid in him. The other is suckling like a trooper and, although he is the smaller and more fragile looking of the two, he might be the one to pull through. Farmer is away on holiday. Ho hum.
