Comment from Volcano Cafe blog regarding what is potentially happening at Bardarbunga volcano in Iceland: This once in a life time event…. It requires 5 dimensional reasoning Looking from above the Bardarbunga earthquakes form a ring ……interpreted as a forming circular faults which generally form at approximately a 15 degree inward slope \——–/ Resulting in a now ongoing caldera collapse into a depressurising or emptying magma chamber some believed to be some 2-4 km below ground level ……….via the rift….. to the eruption site we now see Earthquakes can’t be formed in magma…… so there in “rock” There must be numerous earthquakes to form the circular faults inside the Bardarbunga mountain or caldera floor…..these are absent …….and a caldera collapse isn’t going to fracture rock 10km+ below ground level The ring of earth quakes are occurring between 3-12 km deep in rock, leaving a earthquake void 8km wide and 10+ km deep, this can only be a circular “magma chamber” of unknown depth, ……..These quakes can only being formed by the ingress highly pressurised magma fracturing the rock There is 700m+ of solid Ice cover over Bardarbunga ……. the previously collapsed (-10,000+yrs?) caldera , and the Ice cap acts as a sealed tight “lid”…..its downward force is around and incredible 700 tons per m2 or 500psi The huge 20m+ Ice depression we now see is possibly due to simultaneous events; 1) Eruption magma is melting the underside of the ice cap……hence the subsidence 2) The liquid melt water is trapped and is increasing in temperature 3) 500psi downward pressure is increasing the “boiling point” of the water to 470 degrees Fahrenheit …….so we will see no emerging steam 4) inside the volcano – there is a huge quantity of growing “super hot pressurised liquid water” 5) this is forcing the calderas rim to move up & outwards some 4 meters at ( last measured a few days ago) 6) the caldera floor is being bowed downwards over 7km-11km area i.e. over pressurising 7) this is keeping/holding the ingress of new magma “back” or down and this magma chamber is expanding width wise hence the circular quakes 3-12 km deep in rock 8) the quakes are concentrated under the West & North Western Side just where there is…….. NO Ice cover ……i.e. the weakest point The eruption of Mount St. Helens explosion, on May 18 1980, was initiated by an earthquake and rockslide involving one-half cubic mile of rock. As the summit and north slope slid off the volcano that morning, pressure was released inside the volcano – where super hot liquid water immediately “flashed to steam”. The northward-directed steam explosion released energy equivalent to 20 million tons of TNT, the total energy output…….. Potentially how much super hot liquid water immediately “flashed to steam” for a 20mt explosion……..420 cubic meters raised 100 degrees Celsius over its boiling point = a 20mt energy release!!! The energy output on May 18, was equivalent to 400 million tons of TNT (400mt) – approximately 20,000 Hiroshima-size atomic bombs. Under Bardarbunga ……If there is just one cubic km of “super hot liquid water” 50 degrees above boiling …….and the north west area failed ……..ALL the water would immediately be “flashed to steam” ………expand some 1600x……. releasing in a instant ……energy equivalent to a 57 mega ton explosion, …….and strait after follows the magma eruption Tsar Bomba USSR, most powerful nuclear weapon ever detonated, yield of 50 megatons, (50 million tons of TNT) Ok I’m no expert ……. it could be even worst ………..keep well back
