Commissioners Corner by Lee Sweeten Here it is the middle of July already and before you know it school will be starting again and soon after we will begin to feel the chill of Fall. I guess it seems a bit strange to be talking about cooler weather in the middle of July. However, it will be here before long and while I now complain about the summer heat, I will then start complaining about the winter cold. I seem to remember that when I was quite a bit younger neither the heat or the cold bothered me all that much. Now as I grow older, my body likes neither. Last week, we held our first Commissioners Court in the newly remodeled Courthouse. If you have not had opportunity to tour the building, I would suggest that you do so. Unfortunately, the acoustics in the Courtroom leave much to be desired and if more than one person is talking at the same time it is difficult to understand what is being said. I guess that I should say I think it is the acoustics and not just my hearing. Anyway, the meeting was fairly routine with no major items on the agenda. Even at that, we took no action on several items simply because we did not have all of the necessary information to make decisions. One of the items on the agenda that we did complete was a decision to display the words In God We Trust in a prominent location in the Courthouse. Commissioner Epperson asked that we place this item on the agenda and that we pass a resolution in support of placing the wording in the Courthouse. After passing the resolution, we initially looked at posting the wording in the Courtroom but after discussion we felt that many visitors to the Courthouse might not see the words so it was decided to find the most prominent place and display the wording there. The County received official approval from TXDOT on the grant funding this last week. Hopefully, in the next few days we can begin work on the streets in Barksdale. Once we begin, we ask for your patience while we complete the project. It is hoped that we can finish up prior to the beginning of school. In the next few days we should receive the certified appraisals from the Edwards Central Appraisal District and while we have already begun work on next years budget, we now have the ability to expedite the process. While I have had a few individuals contact me related to this issue, I had hoped for more community involvement in the process. After all it is your money as well as mine (tax money) that we will be spending. This weeks quote comes from Robert Half who said People try to live within their income so they can afford to pay taxes to a government that cant live within its income. As always, if you have comments on this article or other County related issues, feel free to contact me either on my cell (210) 912-8481 or via email at burrogone@yahoo
