Commit 3 mistakes at SP School and you are rusticated! Institution Goes Tough On ‘Mistakes’ By Students SPOTLIGHT IMRAN MUZAFFAR Srinagar, Apr 2: Authorities at one of the oldest educational institutions in state’s summer capital, Sri Pratap School, have gone tough on increase in number of “mistakes” committed by students in and around the campus. Now, according to officials, if a student commits three back-to-back mistakes, he would be seriously dealt with and may face rustication from the institution. For that, the institution has introduced a system of identification through which they can spot students committing “three mistakes in a go.” The identification goes like this: On students’ identity cards, the officials have printed three red-color circular dots, each of which would be marked in case a student commits a “mistake.” If all the three dots are marked on anyone’s card, he faces a possible rustication. However, officials have not mentioned what action of a student would be marked as a mistake. Bunking classes, resorting to fights and ragging with each other and roaming in recreational parks throughout the day are some of the rampant complaints officials have observed against a large chunk of students at the school. “Introducing this kind of mechanism was the need of the hour,” Principal, Sri Pratap Higher Secondary School, Bashir Ahmad, told Greater Kashmir. “What we actually try to aim is to record a student’s mistakes. This mechanism would ensure proper behavior of students in and outside of the school.” He said serious action would be taken against a student found committing “three mistakes.” “The new red-dot mechanism is a warning for those students who only roam, particularly students of 11th and 12th,” the principal said. “We usually counsel students through parents. But yes, a higher level of mischief by a student would result in rustication.” The school’s official declaration has students of the institution chatting about fiction novel ‘The 3 Mistakes of my Life’ by writer Chetan Bhagat. Dozens of students in and around the school campus were also seen discussing the new red-dot mechanism. However, Director School Education Kashmir, Mir Tariq Ali, said small mistakes by students can’t result into rustication. “We have a policy at the Directorate- level that if students commit any mistake, we counsel them with the help of their parents,” he said. “We also have to give students right to be heard. There are laws according to which we have to govern.” Mir said a school can’t take such a decision itself. “This kills the mission of education,” he said. “A student,” he noted, “can’t be rusticated for a mistake.”
