Common Core is EXPERIMENTAL – the standards are a grand experiment and Floridas children are the guinea pigs. The standards and assessments have never been tested anywhere, so the promised outcomes are nothing more than theoretical. Our kids deserve proven educational methods, not expensive fads that change every few years. It REMOVES LOCAL CONTROL of Education - Common Core Standards are created and controlled by unelected and unaccountable Washington DC bureaucrats, funded primarily by the federal government and large corporations with financial interest in the materials and testing required for the implementation. Florida has made minor tweaks to the national standards, and is expected to utilize national Common Core-aligned tests which will drive instruction. Common Core Standards are SUBSTANDARD - The Common Core standards are portrayed as rigorous and internationally benchmarked, yet the evidence and expert review show that they are neither. The developers of Common Core admit that their definition of college readiness is for a non-selective two-year community college. Experts say our children graduating from high school will be reading at only a 7th grade level and will be at least two years behind our international counterparts in mathematics. Children are not ONE SIZE FITS ALL - The creators of Common Core Standards would like to treat every child as if they are all exactly the same and learn at the same pace. Every child is unique and learns differently, and Florida teachers must have the flexibility to teach each child according to his or her needs and abilities. Common Core destroys the Art of Teaching.
