Community Question posts are to support and encourage gentle, peaceful parenting. Please keep comments respectful - free of shame, blame and punishment. Thank you! My son is 18mo and weve noticed 3 big shifts recently in his behavior. First, he used to sit to eat, but recently started dumping/throwing his plate of food. Hes not mad, just very matter of fact. Sometimes its at the beginning of the meal, other times it’s the middle or the end. It doesnt happen every meal. My first reaction is a shocked NO! I know that does nothing to help, I just feel helpless. We will help him clean it up, and we talk about how we dont throw food, and food belongs on the plate or table. Second, he started smacking things off of tables. It seems random. Hell be playing and get up and walk over to his table and smack everything off. If we try to stop him he starts smacking and waving faster, like its a game. I try to redirect him, talk to him about how we dont treat our things this way. I demonstrate how we use gentle hands. And again, we help him clean it up. Third, he started to potty train a couple months ago, self-guided, and was doing great in training pants with maybe 1 accident every couple of days. Then he just stopped telling us. Most of the time he tells us if he has already gone, but not before. Hell even sit on the potty for a while and then pee in a diaper or on the floor. It seems like these last few weeks have blown up in our face. Hes otherwise very happy, healthy and meeting all milestones. Hes pretty great at following directions in other aspects of life. We dont spank, but we are having a hard time not yelling. Its not an angry yell, just usually shock or surprise. Is there something that happens at 18mo that I just dont know about? I would love to hear about some real life experiences as to what did and didnt work. Thank you everyone!
