Community gardens were initially known by another name, “victory gardens.” Beginning during World War I and continuing with World War II, citizens were encouraged to grow their own vegetables. These citizen gardens relieved shortages due to men being taken away from farm labor for military service. Also, producing vegetables from home gardens gave each individual an opportunity to contribute to the war effort, which was seen as a morale builder. bit.ly/1n533Fl
