Companionship in a Relationship This is one of the greatest needs of human beings is companionship. It is man’s need for companionship that brought WOMAN about in the first place. The popular saying – ‘Two Heads are Better Than One’ speaks of nothing but companionship…it describes man’s inherent ability and tendency to be social, to relate with someone intimately on spiritual, psychological, emotional and physical levels. The pledge, promise and responsibility of marriage is one of companionship; that is when people are asked why they fell in love with their spouses, they say something like ‘I fell for him/her because he/she was ALWAYS THERE for me’. And if you asked me where that ‘THERE’ is, I would say its in the heart of the person loving and the person feeling loved; and in marriage, that describes both husband and wife. They both love the other person and are loved by the other person in return. That’s companionship. The love that people have towards their spouses makes them carry those spouses about in their hearts. Their thoughts are with each other and about each other, to the extent that sometimes their thoughts unite as one and some people call this telepathy; I call it COMPANIONSHIP. This is one of the foundational stones of marriage. If you’re not interested in being with that person, WHY on Earth did you marry them? Why should you prefer to go out to party while your spouse waits ALONE at home? Why would you rather stay late at work when you could [and SHOULD] be with your spouse? Why would ANYBODY ELSE on Earth be closer to you than your spouse? If anyone else is giving you companionship of the kind that your spouse should be giving you, it’s high time you took stock of things.
