Completed the visit to Jerash, Aman. The awesome historical preservation of the Roman city resplendent with Byzantine cultural traits intrigues me how a non-descript Jewish carpenter with no army, no political aspirations and despised by his own community could have become the omniscient deity of Christianity. The legislative decree to make Christianity the state religion may account for the 1000 year prominence of the faith.before the age of Islam dominated the region. But what could have spurred the military might of the Romans to yield to a controversial Jewish radical 2000 years ago prompts some reflection. With these lofty thoughts i went to Bethany. Stood at the site where the man himself is believed to have been baptised by John. Then dipped my hairy Indian arm into the Jordan river. Nice! Sorry no miracles observed but what a treat to the senses to feel a little bit of that ancient wonder when Jesus walked the earth. Soaking the sights and sounds brought some of the scriptures to life. Then the sms rang and i was back on earth...
