Compression Garments Compression garments were being used - TopicsExpress

Compression Garments Compression garments were being used primarily by runners and triathletes but increasingly they are gaining popularity in other sports. Compression garments are worn during competition to improve performance and post competition to enhance the speed of recovery. It is claimed that the wearing of compression sleeves increases the blood circulation in the legs when wearing compression socks and the arms when wearing arm sleeves. In sporting terms increased blood circulation may provide the following benefits: - • Increased oxygen to the muscles providing increased energy levels. • Decreased possibility of muscle damage. • Increased recovery of muscle tissue • Decreased build-up of lactic acid and cramping I always wear compression socks, although they do nothing for your street credibility when they are pulled firmly up to the knee. I make sure that I have the right size compression socks, giving me good compression and then I fold them down in around 3 inch layers until they look like normal socks. I find that they then provide me with excellent support to my achilles. I am susceptible to calf tension, which I put down to my footballing days when I covered the left back position for Porthcawl AFC 1st`s with some style, in the Welsh Amateur League. I picked up many ankle injuries/sprains playing football, which I never got treated professionally and which has now left me with poor foot/ankle mobility. If I feel a build-up of calf tension at any time during my run, I just unravel my compression socks back up to full height, to give me that extra security. I then revise my planned route to quiet country lanes where no one can see me wearing them. Charles
