Conditioning Your American Bully This is a very basic yet very effective program. I like to use a 4-6 week program for dogs around 16 months old & up. I typically do a 4 weeks program but I’ll give a dog a week or 2 more depending on the dogs current condition. (some are couch potatoes and need that week or 2 to get them started safely). Younger dogs are still developing and I don’t recommend working young dogs as hard.(let them develop). Keeping mass is key. So, all sessions should be short. Long sessions will help to cut fat but will also kill mass. I never go more than a mile. I just increase the intensity. Week 1: I start out with ½ - 1 mile walks. This helps the dog acclimate to the work. Week 2: I’ll go up to a mile & speed walking. Week 3: Faster pace with some short sprints on a flexi leash so the dog can really run (3 days on 1 day off). The 1st 3 days (m-t-w) of week 4 will be the same as week 3. Days 4-5(th & f) off. Day 6(sat) SHOWTIME. The feeding schedule is probably more important. If the dog that’s being conditioned is not properly fed you’ll do more bad than good. I only use raw during a conditioning period & sometimes to maintain certain dogs. The raw we use has little to no fat, high in protein, lots of nutrients and is 100% organic & grass fed beef. Try to get the best raw you can get your hands on. We also use a high quality kibble. For dogs 70-85 lbs. Week 1: am feeding: ½ lb raw with 2 cups of kibble & pm feeding: ½ raw. Week 2: am feeding: 1 lb raw 3 cups of kibble & pm feeding 1 lb raw. Week 3: am feeding: 2 – 2 1/2 lb raw & pm feeding: 1 - 1 ½ lbs raw. Week 4: Days 1,2 & 3(m,t,w) same as week 3. Days 4 & 5 am feeding: ½ raw 3 cups kibble pm feeding: ½ lb raw & 3 cups kibble. Day 6(show day) potatoes or kibble. We aim to get as much lean muscle without losing mass & really want to make the muscles pop. During training the dog may have a bit more tuck in the ribs then we want so we carb them up as we get closer to the show date so the dogs still have a hard but massive look. Hope this will help you get your best friend ready for their next competition!
